I just got back from the doctor. I just wanted her to tell me what I could do to lose 10 pounds so I could join the military.

She says "You're not joining the military anytime soon like this." She told me that my blood pressure was 165/104 and that I might need medication.

:(

Anyway, I have an appointment with a dietician and with a physical therapist (to build strength in my knees). High blood pressure would explain my severe irritability. I hope it's just my diet (or lack thereof).

Not cool though. I get bloodwork done tomorrow, and I have to fast after midnight.

Edit: They just drew blood lipids and thyroid tests. No biggie.

I went to PT and it looks like my legs are pretty underpowered. I now run 1 hour a day, 3 days a week, along with about 90 more minutes of misc exercises 7 days a week, plus PT 3 times a week.

I'm going to have to eat more to keep up with this!

wow, the bottom number is your diastolic blood pressure and is indicative of how much "rest" your heat is getting. Anything above 90 isn't good :/ Start running!

Well, I get about 2 or 3 hours of exercise a week. Usually ~1 hour / 3 times a week. It's moderate, not heavy.

You need to stay with it, and lower your sodium intake as much as possible. Lose the weight, and your BP will drop. Add another hour of cardio each week.

Wow, that's scary. Does high blood pressure run in your family?

My resting blood pressure is like 102/60

I sit on my ass all day and don't exercise. :(

You'll make it through this. Some of it might be your weight, some might be hereditary and a lot might be due to your current diet. Allow your doctor to prescribe the necessary medications to get it under control. You can then take the necessary action to get your diet under control. Get the fat and salt out of your diet. Exercise: you don't need to run marathons to exercise. Walking 20 minutes a day would do you wonders.

I've been through this before. I was once taking 3 medications for high B.P. I'm now down to taking 1/2 dose of one of the medications and my B.P. is 122/80. I will continue to keep a healthy attitude and hope that I can bump off the remaining medicine within the next 6-8 months and be medication-free with regards to hypertension.

When my hypertension was first diagnosed, it was in the E.R. of a hospital. I wasn't feeling good at all and my B.P. reading was 185/105. As you can see, lifestyle changes (such as those I've made) can have a dramatic effect at getting this disease under control.

Feel free to P.M. me with any additional questions that you may have. Oh, I'm taking Atenolol (a beta blocker) which I'm having lots of success with. The ACE inhibitors didn't do a thing for me when it came to lowering my B.P. However, your body might respond well to ACE inhibitors.

Yeah, she said that she thinks that the BP will come down with weight loss. She wants me to lose 18 pounds (to get to 200).

Oh, here's my specs :)P)

20 years old
218 pounds
74"

Amused: Thanks for the advice man. You've been helping me out a whole lot and I appreciate it. I'm going to the dietician in a week (I think). I'll try to add another hour, but I'm not taking in enough energy. I'm going to try eating more. I eat very, very little and I'm sure that my metabolism is slower than Forrest Gump on a turtle right now.

biffbacon: I actually don't eat that much greasy food. Every once in a while I do, but I usually eat stuff like pasta and chicken.

You can do one simple thing to lower your blood pressure, come to think of it two.

1) Quit drinking any soda. Yeah I know its as hard as giving up crack, but its a major contributor to sodium in our diets.

2) Begin drinking Green Tea. Green Tea is a natural anti-infammatory and brings down ones blood pressure after simply two weeks of useage.

Try these two things for two weeks and have her re-take your blood pressure and let me know how well you did.

Chaotic,

You might want to go to your local book store and purchase a book: "The Fat Flush Plan." This is the plan I followed to get rid of most of my B.P. medication. Due to recent surgery, I haven't been able to take walks. However, when I was following the plan last summer, my B.P. was 105 - 110 / 75.

Actually, I would suggest that you buy your own blood pressure tester gear for home use. Sam's Club has some great prices on this equipment (even cheaper than Costo.)

Green tea eh? Heck, I'll try it.

I'll make it in the military some way, somehow.

Ok, let biffbacon be serious for a second, and recall some med school nonsense...

while your BP is elevated, it is concerning, but i would not worry myself to death over it. For an actual diagnosis of hypertension, you have to have at least two elevated readings at least three days apart. From my understanding, you have only had one elevated reading. It could be possible that you have hypertension, but it could also be possible that something was just going on that day that was causing your BP to be elevated (ie extra stress... mad about something... worried etc.). There is also a well known phenomenon called "white coat hypertension" which refers to people who otherwise have normal BP's, but their readings are always elevated at the physicians office due to anxiety.

Basically what I am try to say, is it is concerning, but dont jump to conclusions just yet. dont go out and waste money on stuff like a home BP monitor, until your sure of the diagnosis. start slowly. eat right. Cut out caffeine (as someone said with regards to pop and sodium), and most importantly start a regular exercise regime. start slowly... walk, then jog when ready etc. Actually the first line of therapy is lifestyle modification... which is tried before BP meds are started (unless for some reason your next reading was excessively concerning).

sorry to run on, but just trying to help. if you have any questions, please message me

I don't think going out any buying a B.P monitor is going overboard. Sometimes, people's readings are elevated in the doctor's office. If you own a B.P. monitor, you could consistently check your B.P. at home when you are more relaxed and not apprehensive like you could be in the doctor's office. However, if the diagnosis is proper by your doctor, your doctor will suggest that you go out and buy a B.P. monitoring device.

i agree that if his pressure is elevated he should buy a cuff, but I think that for a 20 year old a cuff (which can be pricy for nice ones) might be a bit of overkill for the time being. i might go with the wait and see approach.... id just follow the doc's recommendations

Yeah, I'm going to hold off on getting one of those. I guess they'll take my BP again in the morning. I'm fasting now, and I don't know what that's supposed to do, but I'm doing it anyway.

The last thing that I ate was white bread and grapefruit.

I don't think that it's that bad. I hope it's not, anyway.
