this laptop is just shameful, why did toshiba do this

2 desktop P4 toshibas walked out the door in an hour the last time I was at compusa

desktop chips are cheap= better price

P4 sells, joe sixpack buys machines with AOL, P4 stickers, and envision monitors

dont like it go buy the toshiba with the mobile P4 and GF4 go

The biz/corp line of toshiba lappys also have a longer design/life cycle than the consumer targeted models

Um, did you read the link? This is a mobile P4 machine using an Intel chipset.

<< ? Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor- M 1.7 GHz (1.3V) >>

And the average business laptop owner isn't going to give a rat's ass whether they have a GF go or S3, or ATI Radeon card. The S3 is fine for the vast majority of laptop owners out there.

a p4 1.7 ghz machine with a super savage ix. are they insane?

Toshiba is really falling off, with their desktop CPU laptops, crappy ALI alladin T chipsets and now this atrocity. good god. So you are have to either buy the el cheapo feeling satelite 5105 or this nicely built supersavage powered pile of crud if you want toshiba. man that bad.

As AmusedOne says, most people couldn't give a damn how fast their laptop plays Quake III. If I were spec'ing a laptop for a colleague, I'd go for a relatively fast CPU, lots of memory, a big hard drive, and an ATI Rage Mobility 16 MB probably (so they can run their OpenGL screensavers nicely).

i was just saying in general man. toshiba in the past would have put top of the line stuff in their machines.

their sat pro 6000 , sat 1800 , tecra 9000, and portege series all use the alladin T. the 1800 and 1900 satelites use desktop chips as does the 5005 series. the 5105 feels like it was made out of crap. back in the early 90s it was... go get a toshiba. they were like laptop perfection and it was worth paying the extra money.

this new tecra 9100, costs $2900. its not even competitively priced with offerings from other companies (compaq evo n800 is gonna have a radeon 7500, 802.11b and p4 1.7 as well and should cost less) that are just as big name. And the worst thing is the supersavage ix is not at all a good chipset for even 2d since its 2d is subpar even compared to a ati rage mobility. They are really cutting corners now, and its just sad to see it happen.

I have no problems with the S3 chip. The Tecra series is aimed at corporations, and they don't need top-notch 3D (just what I would want, all my employees playing Quake on the company's time). The S3 is probably inexpensive, easy to integrate, doesn't use much power, and provides TV-out functions. What more could a business want?
I do curse them for using desktop CPUs in their newest units. Other manufacturers have been doing it for years (Compaq), and I guess Toshiba had to do it to get competitive. Shame on Toshiba for putting the Alladin video with it's UMA memory in the Satellite Pro 6000. As long as the UMA video stays in the low end laptops, I don't care. You buy a low end laptop, you are going to get low end video, which is still capable of 3D you know.
Tecra 9100 S3 IX/MX Super Savage
Tecra 9000 S3 IX/MX Super Savage
Sat Pro 6100 nVidia GeForce4GO 420
Sat Pro 6000 Trident Alladdin UMA
Satellite 1900 ATI Radeon Mobility
Satellite 1800 Trident Alladdin UMA
Satellite 1000 Intel 830MG UMA

BTW: Rumor has it that Toyota paints the cover of the Satellite 5000 series, and we all know Toyota is legendary for the reliability of its cars and trucks.
