My laptop, this ASUS K43SJ

has said that expansion only to 8 GB is allowed.

My questions

1. Does that mean one slot cannot have 8 GB Ram stick ?
2. Will I have to apple 4 GB x 2 for getting 8 GB RAM ?

Edit - Currently I have 2 GB x 2 installed. Wanting to upgrade to 8 GB RAM stick, single stick. And +2 GB if possible.

Please let me know your inputs. Thanks in advance. :)

The HM65 Express chipset seems to support 16gb of ram, but your motherboard still may not.

I think there is only one way to find out.

Get an 8gb stick and try it.

I would just get a 4gb stick and have 6gb. That should be plenty for that laptop.

why do you want a single stick? wouldn't you want dual-channel?

Dual channel is way over rated.

There's not much performance difference between single and dual channel unless you are a benchmark queen. :D

but still it's an advantage, so if you have a choice between the two, why choose lower performance?

The only reason for most people to go DC is because they sell DC kits at good prices.

If you already have some ram, and you are worried that upgrading one stick will lose you the DC performance advantage, you are basically worrying about nothing.

Also, most modern Intel chipsets will run in DC mode even with different sized ram sticks in each slot.

In short, don't worry about DC mode, worry about how much ram you have,

In the Intel world, DC now only shows 1-5% improvement, 2-3% on average. Not the end of the world.

Lots of lappy MFR's are doing a single-slot design these days to save space.

[EDIT] Oops... misread OP. I would consider buying a single 8GB stick from a local place that allows no-fuss returns. If you can use 10GB, you're good to add another later. (It'll run in a hybrid single/dual-channel mode that's unnoticeable from full DC.)

Quote:"DDR3 1333 MHz SDRAM, 2 x SO-DIMM socket for expansion up to 8 G SDRAM"

That imply 2 x 4GB.

I second the recommendation of trying a single 8 GB stick from someplace that allows easy returns. My laptop (HP DV6t-2000) also stated that there was an 8 GB limit even though the chipset supports 16 GB. Inserted 16 GB and the laptop detects it just fine and the OS (Windows 10) sees it all as well.

i too highly recommend testing viability of upgrades with parts from local stores that offer easssssy returns.

i personally have had mixed experiences with ram compatibilities and you really just never know.... but when the chipset screams support for something, only a lazy bios is going to let you down. support from a laptop manufacturer means they actually validated it as functioning with that much ram during their design process by putting the ram in it and turning it on. if the size of ram you want to use was not commonly available at the time of release, they probably simply didn't try it out. some stores will be happy to do a return on the spot if it doesnt work, try taking it in with you and popping it in whilst you're there.

massive necro, i know. but its really important people get the good value upgrades without needlessly buying over priced modern hardware when for the majority of folk 10 year old hardware with maxRAM+SSD is really gonna shine.

if ps1 with hdmi can exist, you can upgrade.

tl;dr

upgrade upgrade upgrade.
