My parents are looking into getting a laptop, mainly going to be used for typing Word docs, browsing internet, etc. They really want the price to be no more than $1000. They went to Best Buy and told me they liked this one: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp...yId=pcmcat39100050016&id=1140393564993 . Now they are asking me if I think it is alright, so they can go ahead and make the purchase. P.S. What would be the easiest way to take files from our old computer (it is really old, PII 400mhz, 64mb ram, etc). Thanks.

I have the next model up of that laptop, and for the purposes you state, it is fine.

Well, I work at Best Buy, and that Laptop is really nice. It's a powerful gaming machine though. With that Athlon 64 in there, if you're going mobile, won't give you the battery life.

I'd gowith this <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp...=7727597&type=product&id=1140393588851 ">http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp...597&type=product&id=11403935888

Whoops sorry, if this doesn't work. Search for the Compaq V5120

Hey one more thing. Apparently, my parents were looking at the MX7118, not the MX7120, but it appears the MX7120 is a better deal. Can you confirm, and tell me which you would go with

Yeah, I have a similar model. There are two main problems with that chassis: screen flickering and hinge cracking. It doesn't affect everyone, but it did affect mine. The screen flicker is easy to fix with hot glue (you have to glue in a couple of connectors under the LCD screen that get loose over time). The cracked hinges are just a cosmetic thing. Other than that it's a fantastic laptop, very fast. Mine has a 3200+ Athlon 64 processor in it. I should also note that the battery life isn't so hot; you'll get less than 2 hours on it starting out, and after a year or two it will drop down to an hour.

As far as upgradability, it handles XP Professional very well. The one you linked to has MCE, which you may like even more. I put a 7200rpm hard drive in mine, which makes it boot up much faster but makes the area around it pretty hot on your laptop. Also, the computer can take a maximum of 2gb of ram, not 1.5gb. You just have to do a lot more work to install 2 gigs. I've had mine for over a year and it's still running strong. Let us know if you have any other questions, I have lots more info if you want it. Just PM me.
