Very nice look into the situation..

In the end it's great that they caught the guy, and if it weren't for Eve Carson the killer may very well have gotten away with it--or at worst it would've been heavily delayed..and I suppose that's what's ultimately important. But did it really need to take another tragic incident to draw such attention towards it?

Yes, it really is interesting which stories get national attention and which do not. And yet there are people who still believe that the media attempts to downplay black on white crime.

Very good points in that story. I can attest to the fact that Duke is in the middle of a few rundown parts of Durham. You do NOT want to go through certain parts of the neighborhood alone at night (even though I have on occasion).

The story caught me by surprise because I did in fact read about the Mahato murder, but I had forgotten about it before it was mentioned in the article. The suddenness of my realization carried more meaning than any of the words in that article could.

heh, what sucks is had the police bothered trying to catch the guy after killing the first person, the chick would still be alive.

the police and the system are almost worthless.

the police and the system are almost worthless unless there is intense pressure from the media, and in turn, the public to catch the killer.

Fixed.

now you wonder if the girls family will press charges against the police for not finding the killer sooner. :(

Um....hmm...I'm pretty sure this story was getting a lot of attention before we knew the color of the suspect(s) skin

And it still is. When do you suppose the downplaying will start?

This made me think of this thread.

We are hardwired to pay more and better attention to attractive people, animals and things. Anyone who says otherwise is fooling themselves.

Trying to teach people otherwise is fighting against our very nature.

It may not be PC, but it is the truth.

You generally cannot sue the police for not protecting you from crime.
People have tried suing before and the courts usually rule they are not responsible.

I believe there was even a case where a victim in a home burglary called 911 and was killed before the police arrived. The family tried to sue the police and they lost.

Eve Carson is an exception. She was student body president and had 5,000 people show up for a vigil for her. That is pretty amazing for someone her age, imagine how many people would show up to your impromptu vigil (meaning no flying folks in from out of town).

Just because it's true that attractive white women get more media coverage doesn't affect the possibility that the media attempts to downplay black on white crime. You can have both.
