I find it ironic that Red Squirrel is defending the Liberals given their atrocious record on Northern Ontario. A lot of the mining industry left the area due to the raising hydro rates, to find some green energy pipe dream that never materialized, and those cancelled power plants they used to buy the last election. Not to mention elimination of the ONR, which was a vital passenger link between the North and the GTA. Or when they wanted to raise your gas taxes 10 cents a litre to find public transit for Toronto.
Right now Ontario is broke. We have the highest debt in the country by quite a wide margin. Even when compared to Quebec, which has a similar size, and have-not provinces with their much weaker economies. The fact that the feds had to give equalization payments is frankly an embarrassment. We're supposed to be the economic engine of the country. Yet wages have stagnated (admittedly not their fault), the only jobs being created are minimum wage (entirely their fault), and the cost of living has doubled over their term in office (entirely their fault). They only folks getting rich off it seem to be unionized public sector workers, whose ranks have swelled. Many of whom are getting paid significantly more than comparable private sector workers. It's not sustainable.
Then there's all the scandals and corruption, which is really just the icing on the cake. McGuinty high tailed it out of the country before the shit hit the fan with the power plants. $1 billion spent to cancel the projects at the last minute just so they could hold on to two seats.
People get this image that the Liberals are a socialist party. They aren't. They don't stand behind any principals. They're pro-big business, as long as big business keeps donating. They're pro-labour, as long as labour keeps voting for them. Yet they care little for the average joe. All you are to them is an endless supply of money to fund their pork projects. They embody the worst kind of self serving assholes in politics. Enough to make every other politician envy them. They're making a mockery of our democracy in the process.
Politics aside, I really do think Northern Ontario should be its own province. It has gotten ignored by government after government down here in Toronto. They have unique needs and they'd be better able to develop economically without interference or apathy from the south.
