This is why you don't let people borrow/use your tools.

Neighbor was using my miter saw in the garage to trim some quarter-round (which I "sold" to him as I had some laying around and he needed... never paid me the $20)
Seems he didn't pay attention and chopped right through the power cable. Luckily, he wasn't hurt but now he's using phrases like "We can replace it." and "We'll figure it out"

WTF? What's all this "we" talk? You were in my garage, using my miter saw, cutting wood you "bought" from me. Break it. And I'm supposed to fix it? Fuck me.

That being said, what's everyone's recommendation for fixing this? (Besides throwing it through his window) Of course it's pretty much dead center in the cable too so I don't really just want to put a new plug on it as then it's about 2 feet in length.

How's the end attached to the tool?
When your neighbour gets an electrician to fix it will the electrician be able to attach a new one?
This is before the neighbour pays fully for this and buys you a few beers for screwing up your stuff!

Goes into the plastic shroud. Haven't taken it apart yet. Replacement cord looks to be ~$15.
He has expressed no such intentions.

Yeah - this is where my control problems come into play and adversely affect me.

I just want it done. I want it done now. And I want it done right/my way. That parts on me.
And honestly, if somebody can't bring it upon themselves to take immediate responsibility to fix something they've wronged, I don't trust them to fix it right at all and ever.

Got a local factory repair place close? Make him pay to have it repaired...add in some transportation cost dollars to help compensate you for the time and trouble. If the gipuy was a "GOOD" neighbor...or a best friend, solder, tape, and shrink wrap might be fine...but that doesn't sound like it's the case.

And I agree 100% with the thread title. I do not loan my tools...nor do I borrow someone else's tools.

Is there a special kind of solder I need to use?
...

I just want it done. I want it done now. And I want it done right/my way.

No, any common/standard solder like 60/40 would work fine, assuming it has a flux core or you add flux separately.

Quickest way to get it back in service depends on what's available to you. If you have crimp connectors (spade or ring that it probably uses in the junction box if not wire nuts) you could use those, or solder inside that area to the existing wire, or use wire nuts, and for immediacy you could use a suitable gauge extension cord (cut the socket end off). Assuming it's 110VAC up to 15A, you could do 14ga for a normal length cord or 12ga for a very long one, near 50' to 100'.

Indeed this is why you don't let other people borrow your tools, but $15 is pretty minor compared to someone who never returns a tool or cuts their finger off and blows the rest of your day while you're taking them to the hospital. Clearly this neighbor is not safety minded enough to use certain power tools, and especially not yours, on your property no less.

Don't make it difficult. Go to Lowe's/Home Depot, buy a replacement cord and fix it. Put it behind you and learn the lesson. I don't loan tools to anyone.

Just put a new cord on it. It's an easy repair, and a cheap way to find out your neighbor is an idiot/asshole. An idiot for cutting the cord off, and an asshole for not correcting his mistake ASAP.

What's funny is we're generally very good friends with them - open door policy in our houses etc.
I saw him this morning as I was going to the garage. He let me know he finally finished the project he was working on. No mention whatsoever over the cut power cord. I just said "cool" and kept walking. WTF

That just frosts my ass. So fucking disrespectful. I understand the desire to keep a good relationship with your neighbor, but honestly, wouldn't you like to slap him into next week?

Yeap, That's the problem... gotta play "nice", I mean the live 15 feet away from me and GENERALLY are good people. But apparently not in the case.

It takes a special kind of stupid to cut the cord on a mitre saw with the very same mitre saw. Maybe you should build a wall on that side of your house.

Does the saw have a laser guide? The only reason I ask is because I have a Skill circular saw and the same thing happened except when I went to buy a replacement cord it was impossible to find because there was a pcb inside the handle for the laser.

In the end it was easier to strip the wires back at the cut and use a couple of crimp connectors and apply a little heat to shrink the ends and then wrap the hell out of it with some electrical tape. Worked out great and I got to keep the laser guide in tact not that it helps that much but it was the principle ya know what I mean.

Anyway, yeah I learned awhile back not to loan out my tools for this type of reason. I'm so anal about it I won't even let my wife use some of my higher end drill bits because she is notorious for not putting them back were they belong.

Some people don't respect tools. There are certain tools I occasionally loan, but never power tools, and never items that I use in my business. So you can still be neighborly, just in a rational way...if someone wants to borrow a lawn roller, a tamper, a mattock, a maul, a post hole digger, a wheelbarrow, that's fine.
Loaner-class tools, for that special someone. Like when my wife wants to prune some ivy, she gets the old corona pruner, because I know its going to be thrust into the dirt at some point.

Damn...Felco makes some nice looking stuff. Can I borry yer Felco loppers? I got some roots I need to cut deep in the dirt. I'm sure those fancy things won't be bothered by a few rocks as I cut through stuff... :p
Against my better judgement, I loaned my Corona loppers to my neighbor several years ago...who did just that. Brought them back with "dings and chips" in the cutting edges.

I just don't understand how the cord on a miter saw even gets near the blade ? Was the miter saw on the floor?

Back when, brand new 8" B&D circular saw, no brake, 16' cord, slab on grade building, cord in a pile (was right next to the extension cord end), first cut out of the box on a 4x4, set the bitch down on the slab without looking at it, guard hung in the "up" position, ran about 2' over the slab and somehow managed to cut the cord not once, not twice, but 3 times when it ran over the piled up cord, took the pieces back to Sears and got a new one, no problem (made sure the guard worked right before using that one), was stuck with the nickname of "cordkiller" for about 4 months. :( but that was better than "cowkiller" that came much later
