Have you ever counseled someone on the internet who was distraught?

Camden Man Hailed As 'Online Hero'
CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS 3) ?

A man from South Jersey is being called a hero for preventing a man in California from attempting to take his own life.

During an online conversation Monday night, 22-year-old Jesse Coltrane realized his friend was distraught and even suicidal.

"At one moment he was cutting his arms," Coltrane explained.

Jesse said he only knew the 18-year-old's first name and phone number and tried to convince his friend not to kill himself. The conversation lasted well into the evening while his friend continued cutting his forearm with a razor.

Jesse decided to call a police department in Sacramento and officers were able to track down where his friend lived in California.

"Certainly suicide is not new, certainly doing it in front of people that you know is not new unfortunately, but seeing it on a web cam while you're chatting on the internet is new and we're seeing that these are possibilities, before you only saw it in Hollywood," Sgt. Norm Leong of the Sacramento Police Department said.

Sacramento police said when they found the 18-year-old at home, his wounds did not appear to be life-threatening.

However, the teenager was taken to the hospital where he is undergoing a mental evaluation.

Suicidal people seek attention.
If they were really suicidal, they would be dead already.

hmm, reminds me of a sad email i got. i was hanging out on this addictions forum a few years ago looking for some support on personal issues.

i befriended one user and it turned out she was a cutter. all she did was cut herself over and over again, she was obsessed with the pain and it was the only thing left she could "feel" in her life.

anyway, i got an email from her once and talked her out of it... it sucked but i think i helped a little 🙁
