This is why people are suspicious of "non-profit" org. Komen CEO $684K Salary.

If you want to give money to support women with breast cancers, give directly to the victims via private charities or directly to the organization that does actual research. These "non-profit" organization see your donation for a good cause to line their pockets.

I thought this was a common knowledge.

Go around and visit even the most "reputable" charities/organization and see what type of buildings they are in, cars in the parking lot, furniture/PC equipment.

It's a HUGE business.

Yet America continues to blindly donate....more power to these folks I guess.

This is well known, that's why they have to shut down their march in SF next year due to not enough donations. Most of the donations end up funding their staffs, and that's not cool.

Yeah it's sickening how even lot of "non profit" charities are actually for profit. Makes you wonder which charities are good to donate to and which are bad. I tend to be reluctant to give to the bigger ones because they're probably more likely to have lot of overhead, politics and crap.

They need to pay that much to attract top talent.

TOP...TALENT.

Haha, I think it's ironic they pay her almost 3/4 a million a year to spend other people's money. I think there's a lot of qualified people who would take that job for $100k a year.

This is precisely why I donate only to children's hospital Boston, and only directly to the hospital.

People got to get paid. The Susan G. Komen organization has got to be bigger than a lot of corporations. I bet a CEO of a corporation half the size of Komen gets paid that much easily.

Problem is, corporations sell products for profits. You don't need to sell anything I'd you're a non-profits and live on donations. If you're doing it for profits, you're doing it wrong. Why do I need to pay you too, if the money is better spent on the cause that I'm donating to?

The Komen org. takes in something like $350,000,000 a year. That's a lot of money to sort out and spend, and a lot of events to organize. When it gets that big, I doubt a do-gooder who works for free is going to cut it.

At least you have a choice whether to donate.

Your tax money isn't being spent one iota more wisely.

Their intentions derailed years ago when they started to realize they could license out something pink, slap the SGK name on it and make money. The whole "Pink Ribbon" thing is sold under the good intentions of it being for booby health when in reality it's for padding pockets of the organization.

Look at other non-profits org and what they pay. A lot of the non-profits orgs do have volunteers and get pay pittance. Oh, and I'm sure the CEO of komen do a lot of that sorting...

NONE is the answer

First America/Americans have to learn that money does NOT resolve problems. Usually makes them worse.

If you want to help, help with your time OR keep the middle man out and donate directly to the source (and of course KNOW your source).

A bigger problem is that many of these charities only focus on awareness and not research for solving the problem.

Is cancer a problem? You bet. Is there a women alive in the US who is not aware of breast cancer? I doubt it.

So should we spend more money on awareness?

Why not? There are rich people who are retired or married that can do it for less.

I remember Elizabeth Dole who headed the Red Cross didn't take a salary for the first two years, then made a $200,000 salary while donating $500,000.

Wasn't the CEO the one who decided to stop funding Planned Parenthoods breast cancer screening because they also did abortions?

Also, didn't she agree to step down for the good of the charity but is still in charge a year later?

I just read about her but can't remember where. She is a shifty character.

You can look on guidestar.org and review the 990's of all not for profits. Scroll through the financials and you will see the salaries for the key leaders, board of directors, etc.

The Komen fund paid $26M in salaries last year.

And/or give local. Plenty of food pantries and orphanages.

While that is generally true with a lot of charities...

"It's about a quarter of a million dollars more than what we see for charities of this size. . . . This is more than the head of the Red Cross is making for an organization that is one-tenth the size of the Red Cross," Ken Berger, the president and CEO of charity evaluator Charity Navigator, told NBC.

It may or may not be the same CEO.

Is there something wrong with not supporting an organization that performs abortions? :colbert:
