This was actually commonplace way back. NJ just realized their residents weren't getting any smarter so they couldn't change. Better safe than sorry.............

That same dollar could also buy you a 2-liter (67.63oz) instead of the overpriced 20oz bottles.:)

That's amusing too - illegal to pump your own gas? One state over, in Pennsylvania, I haven't seen a full-service gas station in years. Everything is self-serve.

So do they think people are igniting themselves on a daily basis in the other 48 states?

Yes, and 80% of the people who do it are women.

Mythbusters said something interesting about this - women are far more likely to get back in the car after putting the nozzle into the tank, thus increasing the change that they build up a static charge before touching the nozzle again.
Also said that older people are less likely to cause ignition, because they generally will grab the frame of the car to help get out of the car, thus grounding themselves.

I don't find it much of a big deal to just stand there the full minute or so that it takes to finish pumping a tank of gas.

I wonder then - how rigorous is the training then to allow pump attendants to handle this highly dangerous, complex task of pumping gas?
With people pumping gas, it means that people won't be able to steal it as well.
I heard somewhere that gas isn't really too profitable anymore, what's really profitable is the stuff sold in the mini-marts at gas stations now.
Other thing - with people pumping gas, there might be less stolen, but you've also got to pay the people to pump the gas.

One suggestion - hand them the money for the amount of gas you want. They won't put any more than that in it. Just check and make sure that they actually give you the full amount though.

Hey, I can see the rant. A dollar will get you a double cheeseburger at McD's. :)

i'm confused... you asked him to fill it and he did. where's the rant?

if you wanted a certain amount, why not say "$19.00 please."

Fill it up, which means that when it's filled, it's filled. No need to put more in, didn't want more in. I tried to stop and said , "That's..." as he went past $19 during that pause but he kept going.

Um... if he could put more in then it wasn't completely filled in the first place. As I said, if you wanted a certain amount tell him X gallons or Y dollar amount. He's not psychic.

no he is not psychic but he topped off the gas so he could pocket the extra dollar as a "tip." It's very common when my friend was working at a gas station back in the day. Do that enough and he would be making a lot more than minimum wage.

The EPA claims that topping off is bad.

It's a dumb law but hopefully, they cleaned your windshield.

This is actually true but I don't see your point.

Since when!?!?!? I've been to hawaii twice, 2000 and 2004, never did I encounter an attendant that had to fill our tank for us, this law is the first I've ever heard of...

Took the words out of my mouth. When the pump stops, it's filled. As soon as you put more in, youre topping it off. And no they didn't cleanmy windshield. In fact, the only gas station that does that is the Shell in Cherry Hill just off of 295. I do it myself the other times.

A "tip"? You think the gas station attendant gets to keep that money?

It was like that in Kauai several months ago. Maybe it's limited to that island? Now that I think of it, I'm not sure if Maui was like that as well.

I don't mind having someone pumping my gas, infact I'm lazy enough to seek stations that don't require me to get out of my ride at all. Self service sucks unless you have private cardlock IMO.

I hope they keep this nonsense law in Oregon myself, and consider yourself lucky in NJ.

just tell the guy not to top it off and pay with a credit card, that is what i do.

or you could tell him exactly how much gas you want (in terms of money).
