This is why I hate all politicians

In January of last year our governor was making the rounds bragging that the state had nearly $1 billion surplus. The politicians all started debating on how to spend the money and most thought we should spend it on our shitty roads. Everything was great!

Fast forward to the end of 2014. All of the sudden we need $1.3 billion to fix our roads and they need to raise the sales tax to pay for them! Well isn't that lovely? Of course no one knows for sure what all that money will be spent on but we keep getting told its "in part to fix the roads".

So in under a year we went from having $1 billion surplus to needing to raise over $1 billion per year. Wonder how much we could save by just firing all the politicians?

You can't fire them. ...None of the above... isn't on the ballot.

I hate that as well. I would have less of a problem with it if I actually thought the money was going towards the roads but who knows what they are really going to do with it.

Looks like nothing happened, their estimates were just wrong?

Here in Arizona the first thing each new Governor and legislature does is to cut income taxes. They don't pay the slightest attention to revenue verus expenditures. Then the numbers come in with red ink everywhere and they scream about how the last Governor left a mess behind that can only be cleaned up by gutting education or imposing a temporary sales tax. This year they are counting on extending the sales tax to internet purchases in order to cover a new income tax cut for high earners. No numbers, of course, but the tax cut is ready to roll.

Sigh, So many of you just don't get it. It's not your money, not your property, and not your children. All belong to the state, and the greater good.

I don't agree with the sales tax plan and don't believe it has a prayer of passing. Unfortunately the tax incentives from prior administrations are having a significant impact today on revenues. That said, just increase the gas tax and be done with it.

Our roads suck and cost me over a grand in damage to mg car last year. I can guarantee an increase in the gas tax wouldn't have cost me that much.....

I was fine with the gas tax. I 100% agree that the roads need help and cars drive on roads...we put gas in cars...that made sense! But now everyone has their hands in the cookie jar.

I don't care if they blame Rick or Jenny for the problems. It doesn't matter. Just don't try to convince me that all of the sudden we need $1.3 billion a year more than we already spend on the roads.

Michigan's roads are exceptionally awful. Every time I drive there it's just painful. Literally.

Edit: I dunno. At a certain point I think we just have to accept that taxes happen. If you look around and see that everything that is state owned or operated is a giant pile of shit, it is probably because your taxes are too low.

No we don't need to just accept a tax raise. That is liberal moron thinking. More money doesn't automatically make everything better. More money means more people with their hands out. That is the only thing its guaranteed to do.

OK. I'm going to go drive on my well maintained roads. Feel free to continue thinking you can do better with less.

So what happened to the original 1B surplus?

Who knows.

As soon as it was announced, the news was full of groups claiming they needed it. Then it turned into "we need more than that".

Its sick. And the politicians aren't getting the message. Now they are talking about other ways to "increase revenue". FFS...80% of us just voted down more taxes. But hey...we're going to give Detroit another 1/4 billion dollars!

lol +1

I'm quite sure that once Americans too are taxed to the point that most people can't afford to drive, our highways will also be fabulous.

Or we can strip out military to the point of breaking to pay for the roads. After all, that worked out well for Europe. And if a new tyrant comes up who wants to take over the world, we can rely on the United States to come save us!

oh wait...
