The first job of any mechanic is to verify the complaint. Perhaps the mechanic was just verifying the complaint or had trouble finding the problem. I think she should leave her car at the dealership for another 200 miles.

In response to the OP:
It's usually pretty easy for the driver to disable the recording so this would not help most of the time someone abuses a car similarly.

I've been toying with the idea of installing one for fun, they're not that expensive. What do people do to avoid getting it stolen though? I want to be able to set it up and forget. If I need to take it out and then put it in and hit record each time, half the time I'll forget, or not bother because I'm not going far and that's when something will happen.

People here will break into your car for a loonie that's in the cup holder. They see something that looks electronic they'll definitely be smashing a window.

cheap, makes for a great dash cam. It has dash cam mode so that as soon as it gets power, it starts recording, and records in small files. This way as you run out of space, it deletes the older stuff to make room.

Is it visible? Yes, but it's a camera which can also act as a deterrant.

I work down the street from a bmw dealer and I see the service guys smashing the accelerator on the cars all the time. Many are owner's cars cause they have plates with tags.

People actually want that feature turned on?

Seems it would be handy, in a rag top car. My Jeep Wrangler soft top gets pretty noisy at highway speeds, even if I'm running with the top and windows rolled up. Nature of the beast. :\

Get something that doesn't look aftermarket. mount it above your rear view and it just looks like some windshield rain sensor.

Interesting, I guess that is really the trick to try to get something discreet that looks like it's part of the car. That particular one only has an operating temp of -10C though so it would not work half the time and they do state that it does in fact fail to start. Though I guess another option is even a non discrete one I just need to find a very secure way of mounting it and perhaps put an anti tamper device so that if it's removed it sounds a very loud alarm.

They've come down in price and there are so many options now it almost makes sense to just buy one. Just a pain if people keep smashing your window to rip it out just to be annoying. On the other hand they may think it's always recording so they might actually stay clear.
