12:23 AM and I'm still in the office. Been here since 8:30 AM aside from a half hour or so lunch break and a mini car accident.

Be happy in the fact that you don't have to put up with obnoxious stupid bosses like us cowardly cube rats undergo on a daily basis. :(

I have to put up with obnoxious stupid clients, who are not unlike bosses. I work for them.

Try unemployment.

You'll soon wonder what the hell you were whining about.

I'm not whining, I love what I do. I'm just remembering my 9-5 days.

What sort of self-employment? I don't think I would mind longer hours if it meant I was the one truly profiting from my work.

Whats your business?

I am doing my own thing now, but someday I'll probably take over the family business, sounds appealing to me.

..people I know in business for them selves work 7 days a week,10 hours a day, have no sick leave or retirement and scratch out a blue collar income. Their cash flow looks great but after payroll..taxes and insurance it's a tough living.

9-5 hasn't existed in this country in years unless you work for the government or are a part of a union.

That really depends on the business...A lot of small business fail, but some can really take off.

pace your clients expectations on regarding timeslines. Charge more for emergency rush jobs. They'll get it after a few abnormally high billings.

Yup. Also,, just because you work 75+ hours/week, does not mean the business is failing...some people are just workaholics.

Long time client needed a job done quickly and I had another deadline for another client. I will not charge a longtime loyal client more money for a rush job. They use me all the time.

I didn't realize non-self employed graphic designers usually worked static 9-5 hours.

Depends on the job. I've had jobs which were strictly 9-5 as a GD. I've also had GD jobs where the times varied with the deadlines.

I didn't say that if you have to work that long its failing. My mom works all the time, and business is good.

If you own your own business and don't have too many employees, then working till 4:42 AM is not considered special. :)
