i've just been speaking to my mate, and he was wondering why his Duron 600@600 was running at 61 degrees celcius. This is the transcript of the converstaion:

Him: hmmm my CPU temp 600 @ 600 is 61 degrees celcius
Me: that's HOT! the max u should prob be running is 60, i aim for less than 55
Him: i know. i dont know why tho
Me: have u removed hsf recently, or got new one? it could be that it isn't seated properly, or u haven't taken the little plastic bit off the thermal pad on the new one
Him: i took it off and scooped all the thermal paste off
Me: did u put any back on....?
Him: i didnt put any fresh gooop on, no
Me: then that's ur problem, u NEED that stuff, to provide a contact between all ur die and hs.
it provides a surface between the two cos they both are not totally flat, so u've prob got hardly any contact between them.
Him: ill put some more on then. ill try it now. brb

When he comes back:
Him: ok 38 degrees again :)

I hope this is an insight to how important thermal goop or a thermal pad is.

[edit - making it clear that i do mean degrees celcius]

I had my heatsink a little tilted (it only made contact on one of the side of the core) with some thermal paste. I believe the thermal paste was the only reason the CPU was even stable! It went all the way up to 58ºC... If I had none I doubt it would even boot!
