I finally broke down and bought me a DVD player. After reading reviews and trying to stay under $200.00 I decided to buy a Pioneer DV-343 DVD player. ($144.00 Shipped)

All I can say is WOW! I'm using the S-Video hook up and eveything went very smooth! I even took a Matrix VCD I made and tried playing it. It worked like a champ and looks really great! Im very impressed with this unit and how well it played a VCD!! I have alot of movies on my PC and plain on converting alot more and even going to try SVCD.

the new dv-444 is even more impressive.

slim case design, progressive scan, and mp3 playback (along with vcd/svcd/cdr/cdrw).

I'm tempted to sell my dv-343 for one.

Excellent choice my friend. :)

I have the 333, same thing but older model. It's awesome at playing anything you throw at it. Just make sure you stay under 2500 kbps for VCD and SVCD, or it starts to skip.

The best I have found is SVCD variable bitrate (max 2500kbps, constant quality=65) with TMPGEnc. It takes 2 CDs for a full movie, and when you "backup" from a DVD, it looks very close to the original.

Sugadaddy,,

I think you were one of the first that suggested this DVD player to me or it was one of your choices. :)

Thanks!

The DV-343 has apparently been discontinued in favor of the newer DV-341. Why? Dunno... the 343 was only on the market for a few months. Seems strange that it'd be replaced so quickly...
