I'm in OA and I will be graduating from High School in a little less than a month. For those of you who do not know it is the last year that grade 13 (OA level) is being offered, and students in grade 12 will be graduating along side my classmates. It has been the big scare to all students that they will not get into any universities, as the near double amount of graduates increases the competition to get in greatly. Well universities generally look at your top 6 OA / 12 marks and I am thankful to say that my final average is 90.8%, which has given me acceptance to every program (8 of them) I have applied for spare 1.

I just thought I would share this with you - I look forward to university.

Edit: That one program is multimedia design and I just have not heard as to if I am in yet.

Yep.

Canadian Universities didn't do anything to compensate for it either.
I'm taking a year off!

90.8?

Nice, I ended up getting into my program with a whopping 80.1% average. Methinks you shouldn't have any problems getting in.

I don't know what's the big deal... teh rest of Canada doesn't have OA, and they compete with the rest of Ontarians for schools in Ontario.

Now Canada only has 12 grades as well.
Before, Ontario... had O.A.C.'s (Ontario Acedemic Courses)...

They are now phased out, so all the Ontario students graduating O.A.C.s this year are gruaduating at the same time as all the grade 12's. And they're all in competition for the SAME places in University.

i always thought it was called OAC's???

Also a lot more adults are going back to school they say.

No point in taking a year off as they say theres going to be a back log for years.

Universities have a quota for how many people they can accept from within provice, outside of provice, international, etc.

Yeah, but they still have the extra year of education the rest of the country didn't have... and i can guarantee you that profs don't take that into consideration.

So? Are you suggesting that if they did take it into consideration the OA level students would have an easier time getting in ? I doubt it.

Initially that was my plan as well. Since I plan on going into debt from student loans in second year, having first year covered, I figured I would stay my acceptance a year. Then a friend pointed out that I will make a substantial amount more money working after I graduate, than I will in the year I wait before university working some low end job.

You guys get replies back from the Unis already? The reason I ask, is cause my cousin from India applied to UofT/Mac/Waterloo for Comp Eng, and is worried cause he hasn't gotten any responses back. But from my experience, they send them in mid June.

Btw, just a tip all of you guys going into Engineering from Ontario public HS. We are stupid. Seriously. That extra year is useless. I met people from Nova Scotia, PEI, Alberta, etc.. who learnt much more than we did. I know people who did integration by parts/hardcore Java/some Uni-level Physics in their highschool. And it helps them out.

Also the foriegners (the Russians/Chinese/Indians) will whoop your ass soo bad *unless you are very smart ofcourse*m its not even funny. Sometimes I seriously wish I studied HS back in India or Africa, instead of studing here in Canada. We were so unprepared, it wasn't funny.

I think that the people who make it here to study from those places are the 'cream of the crop' so to speak, so yes naturally they would be very intelligent. I've heard from mid April up until a few days ago, still waiting for one university, so it can vary a lot.

Not really. The Cream of the Crop goto MIT or other Ivy League schools. The ones that don't get in there, come to UofT.
