"President Bush?s chief economist, Gregory Mankiw, struck a political nerve earlier this week when he described the loss of U.S. jobs to overseas companies as ?just a new way of doing international trade.?

He struck my nerve too. The one that pulls the voting trigger. Good bye Mr Bush, Mancow, and the rest of you rich, self serving traitors. Iraq is looking for politicians...move there!

...check Kerry's overall wealth; he puts Bush to shame. But he's looking out for the little guy by removing the special interests out of Washington, so he gets a pass...

How, and be precise now, has Kerry stated that he will stop the flow of jobs overseas?

Be clear that I don't want US jobs going overseas but I tend to take a wider view of subjects. I would want to know what the ,at this time most likely replacement for Pres. Bush, has said he would do. It would be very easy to make the problem worse with the wrong policy.

We need to start cranking up the exports !

The problem is... theres like nothing left of the manufacturing industry in the United States, Bush isn't doing anything about it but encouraging it. When theres no one manufacuring anything , theres no exports. Basic Economics 101.

US manufacturing output is double what it was in 1980. It just requires a few million less people to do that production. Maybe the president should fire all robots.

That's where you are so seriously fooled.

Do you honestly believe the Manufacturing was done here in the U.S.?

This is where it is wrong that these Companies still claim to be "American" Companies.

They keep an American Headquarters with a skeletal crew and all of the manufacturing is done overseas and then they ship the stuff here and put in these "Reports" of how they have doubled Production and YOU believe it.

How gullable.

i am trying to reconcile the trade gap with a GDP jump the biggest it has had in 27 years.

it seems somebody in america is not only manufacturing things, but selling them too.

how strange...

also the old adage "the bottom line always finds it's way yot he consumer." is still, and always will be true...and this includes blame.

for those that are truly concerned about the trade gap, buy american! it may(or may not) cost you a little more, but at least then you will be part of the solution, and not the problem...otherwise you really have no right to complain, just like people that do not vote.

That's an interesting situation where it is a Foriegn Company set up shop in the U.S. employing Americans.

What are the Tax benefits to thee Companies?

AT Experts, please chime in.

Interesting situation indeed. I'm guessing that shipping became such an expensive expenditure that they figured moving the plant to the US would aid the bottom dollar, giving the US more tax money but the suits in Japan with the majority of the profits. However, I'm no expert at this. I hope someone else can take a jab at it

Interestingly enough, the Japanese having their factories in the US is actually cheaper than having them in Japan. The per capita GDP in japan is almost what it is here in the US but I believe they have a somewhat lower percent of their population working so it's a wash. I was reading a book from the 80's that said that the point when it manufacturing a car in Japan and then exporting to the US has the same cost as manufacturing in the US is when the exchange rate is below ~160 yen/dollar. Currently it's a 105yen/$ (but Japan has had a decade of deflation while we've had steadt inflation so bear that in mind.)

Of couse, something similiar can be expected to happen with China and India's relationship with the US but only after about ~20-30 years assuming they move as fast as the japanese did. But the thing is, Japan's population was always less than half the US's but China's and India's populations combined are 8x the US's.

1. I don't see how this is "news." The only "new" information I can see is the record breaking.

2. In case you've been living under a rock or can't read any numbers, the U.S. economy is shifting more towards services than manufacturing. More McDonald's, less Detroit. That's why net exports are so far in the red. That, and also environmental regulations, minimum wage laws, consistent budget cuts to education, increasing longevity, etc.
