$2 Million McLaren F1 Self-Immolates In Sickening Conflagration

It happened yesterday, when the owner took it out after six months of storage and an onlooker alerted the owner to smoke coming from the engine bay. The fire spread quickly and consumed the carbon fiber body work and 6.0 liter BMW V12 with horrifying efficiency. The car was a total loss, valued at $2 million and insured for $3 million, but the financial implications are nothing compared to losing one of these rare gems.

The McLaren F1 is a testament to the magnificent results of form following function, it is quite possibly the purest supercar that will ever be constructed, and to have it die from an engine fire is just sad. Driver error at 231 MPH on the Nurburgring, a tire puncture at full-G on the Pacific Coast Highway followed by a magnificent plummet into the ocean, the first failed attempt at a wheeled vehicle orbital launch... there are many ways for a McLaren F1 to die a glorious death, but to die like so many Pontiac Gran Prixs just doesn't do the car justice. This is just sad. We'll be pouring one out in mourning this evening.

RIP - sad to see it go. There are probably less than 100 of these in the world (the total number produced was only 106), so it's definitely sad to see one die such a senseless death.

the front half looks ok to me, i'm not so sure it's a total loss. mclaren, ferrari, etc. are known to have rebuilt cars that have visibly taken more damage than this.

mclaren f1's that change hands are almost always sent back to mclaren for re-conditioning, and the car is brought back to good as 100% new status, despite neglect, crash damage, botched repairs, and significant customizations performed by tacky owners.

i'll guess about half of the f1's are driven, mostly in the middle east. the rest, like ralph lauren's, are kept under glass. herb chambers drove his through downtown boston once, just to say he did it - then back on the shelf it goes.

That's a cryin' shame. I actually saw a Maserati MC12 here in SoCal. The owner drove it over to a shop near where I work and I got to check it out. There were 4 sick cars there that day, one was a nicely modded black Porsche Carrera GT, the owner of which was doing donuts in our back lot and giving sick rides to some of the guys who worked there.

Fuck people who put these cars under glass. If you're going to own it...drive it.

This is why I carry a fire extinguisher in my Porsche. Had he caught it on time, he could salvage the car.


That being said, teh car might be fixable, looking at the chassis pics, there main structural pieces don't start till about foot and half from the end of the car. It looks like the rear end and little bit of the end of the chassis took the damage.

I remember reading about a super-rare Porsche 959 getting wrecked pretty badly, but they rebuilt it into a convertible Pretty cool, though I haven't read that article in probably 20 years.
