BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A 7-year-old Bakersfield boy found near death under the family Christmas tree has become Kern County's first confirmed flu victim of the season, police said.

Full Story Here

This part made me want to cry:

"Porter added that the last thing Terrance said to his mother was, "I'm going to sleep by the Christmas tree, by my present."

ugh.... there are so many stories of people losing their children. I can't even begin to imagine the loss they must feel.

I doubt any more people will die of this flu than of any other, it will just seem like it with the media hyping every death. Fear sells papers, I guess. :disgust:

As a parent for 3 small kids, that is extremely sad. Made me cry.

My thoughts are with the parents.

Damn, this is horrible. It's hitting young people really really hard. I'm glad that my girlfriend, my mom, dad, sister, and myself got the shot before they ran out.

It's more than just hype. Flu cases are already three times ahead of last year's pace and on track to be the worst than over 30 years. They are on the virge of closing down Schools early before Winter break here in Atlanta metro because so many kids are sick and spreading it.

The problem with statistics is what you're comparing it to. The flu being 3X ahead of last year's pace does not signify that this years flu season will be worse. What if last years flu season was the lowest ever? What if last year, when compared to 30 years of data, the # of people afflicted was very low. There is another contributing factor too, this years flu season may hit harder, when compared to last year, because the vaccine this year does not protect you from the most virulent strain this year. This occurred in 1997 as well. So if anything, it would be better to compare it to 1997. Otherwise, this is still really news hype that's making all of us paranoid.

btw, this article is so sad!

It's not Fujian meaning 'from Fuji' (a mountain in Japan); it's Fujian, the province in China.

Getting the flu shot this year is pointless unless you are a pregnant mother. This shot is for an entirely different strain.

Wow...I just got word from home that a good fourth of my old high school was absent with something. Winter sicknesses are scary. In Fon du Lac, WI, there's a huge outbreak of Whooping Cough. Eveyone drink their orange juice!

How about this story. I got a call last night that my Nephew of 28 went from a healthy young man Friday morning to being declared brain dead Saturday evening due to the flu. Add a couple of heart attacks in there as his Parents watched in horror. We all are in shock, except his Parents. They are beyond what any human being can possibly describe. This isn't hype, this is real. BTW, this was in Arizona.

This is nothing. Most doctors agree that we're long overdue for a flu epidemic akin to earlier flu outbreaks. Expect deaths in the hundreds of thousands.. superflu

Damn, that sucks. Did he have any previous health problems? Must have been really bad to hit someone who was completely healthy though.

EDIT: My mom is sick and she moved herself into a Motel so that she couldn't possibly infect her grandson, my lil nephew who I swear is the cutest/spoilest thing ever.

I've taught for a few years... I was working earlier on "emergency plans" to readjust this weeks lesson plans... (I rarely carry units over from before xmas break to after xmas break). After looking at today's attendance, I thought "uh oh..." as students are dropping like flies, moreso than ever before.

But, I've seen this happen before... Some years are better, some years are worse. Last year was a really good year. This year, the shot doesn't prevent the major strain that's going around and many more will get sick than usual. The funny thing is that more and more people are getting the flu shot, which is fairly useless this year, simply as a result of the media hype.

Edit:

A serious flu pandemic is just a matter of time. The developed countries will fare the best, but many many people will die worldwide. It's just a case of when that slight mutation will happen...
