Ok, I installed a soundblaster 16 pci sound card, winxp installed it fines, runs fine. I even updated the driver for that thing, but still no sound. What gives? I disable the onboard sound too, and it still doesn't give any sound. When I select the sound and audio devices under control panel, the window said, no audio device. Please help, I am very frustrated right now.

I was very frustrated at the problem, and what does a misspelled word got to do with the answer??? (You can't expect everybody to be perfect)

The status of the sound card is good, nothing is wrong. Winxp just didn't pick it up.

if it shows up in your hardware profile but provides no sound check to make sure the speakers are in the right hole, and they're turn on with volume up.

if you only get ? marks in your hardware profile its likely a driver issue.

and if it doesnt show up in the profile at all its either not seated correctly , broken, or the mobo is broken.

Good thing you posted this, my dad's comp is doing the exact same thing with an AWE64.

Works just fine under win98se, reboot into my winxp partition and it doesnt even see the damn card

Heh my friend had the same problem. He still had the speakers plugged into the onboard sound and wondered why it did not work. But yours does sound like a driver problem. Try disabling the onboard sound in the bios before installing the new drivers.

Alright, here's what I did:

I disabled the onboard sound,
WinXP loaded driver alright, no problem
Device started and everything.

BUT, in the sound and audio properties under control panel, in the Volume Tab and Audio tab, WinXP says that there is no audio device, everything is grayed out. I don't know what is wrong? I am reformatting the computer for the 4th time now, and hoping to get it fix. I will let you guys know the status.

Remove the soundcard from the PC altogether before reformatting. Add it after the OS is installed. I believe it is a case of XP installing incorrect drivers while setting the OS up.
