This is really bad, I have no idea what's going on

You got raped paying $400, RMA it.

Prices for these video cards are outrageous anyways these days. It's no wonder so many people are going console instead of PC. It's your choice though.. Either pay $300+, or settle for crappy graphics/resolution.

I remember when you could get a top of the line video card for $300...

$600 for a 7800. Give me a break. A couple years from now and we'll be expected to pay $900 for the newest card, and $600 for the ones below it.

RMA it, they can afford it considering how much money they gouged from you already.

What can I say, you replaced the heatsink and most likely chiped off a chunk or something. Why don't you try removing the heatsink and cleaning off all the thermal grease with rubbing alcohol and then put the stock HSF back on.

Do you have a digicam or something to take a picture to see the card.

You do realize that bogus RMA's could be a contributing reason for higher and higher card costs don't you? I'm not saying its the only reason, but a factor.

So because he didn't shop for a good price, or bought it back when that was the price, he should steal one?

So because video cards are expensive, they're ok to steal?

Things used to cost less, so it's ok to steal?

So stealing them will somehow make them cost less?

At your job, do you encourage people to steal from you because you make a profit?

Nothing you have said makes any sense at all. 🙁

Mr. Vile

I understand tha RMAing under these circumstances is prolly wrong.

Nevertheless I admire your forthrightness demonstrated in this post. And I sympothize (sp?) with your dilema.

Here's hoping you get it worked out

Yeah about $300 less. lol

Besides he's not stealing. He already bought 1, it broke and they are happy to replace it for ya so that next time a new $999 card comes out you'll buy their model. I say RMA it and be more careful next time.

It has no void sticker when you remove the hs/fan. Heck it even has phillips screws making it easy for anyone to remove. Obviously they aren't seriously trying to prevent RMA's on cards that had their HS/Fan replaced. It's expected these days and they would sell less if it was impossible for a consumer to place a 3rd party cooler on it.

But they don't have security devices on candy bars or keep them behind glass windows, so does that make it ok to steal them?

lol I can hear it already.

Do a search on RMA at HardOCP forums. There's a BFG rep who posts on there, he said in no uncertain terms they consider changing HSF as modifying the product and voiding the warranty in a thread a month or two ago.

Of course they don't want you to do it.. But they do want to give you the ability to do it.

If they didn't physically allow it, they'd probably lose sales and in the end - counting all the "theft" RMAs - they would have made more if they did allow it.

I know I wouldn't buy a video card that you couldn't replace the hsf.

Sad to know that dude..It is hard to know that OC and modding components has a potential risk of screwing things up. Like driving a car being drunk.

rma it, dont do it again

rollo, get off your high horse, who cares, your one of the reason computer hardware cost so much to 15 year old kids, youll go out and drop 2gs on video cards to get just a few more fps....

As many as I buy, I don't think I can set the price. It was pretty funny though.
