I'm thinking that this would be better than getting an Iphone or an Android phone. I can just get a USB adapter for mobile connectivity with my cell phone provider and still be able to do things that most Iphone users do. It seems that the Iphone and the likes are just too small. I think, for my needs, what I really want is a full blown mobile computing.

Now, I'm curious. I'm thinking that a bluetooth microphone (if there is one) coupled with a Skype account will allow me to also make phone calls with this device while on the move.

lol @ your idea. I don't see mobile VOIP working out well at 60mph.

Possibly. But if you can maintain mobile connectivity with your cell phone provider, then it should be possible. The killer would be if latency will be over 200ms.

- has a hard drive with moving parts
- weighs a lb and a half
- $800+
- no built-in 3G = having to tether or use USB stick
- 5GB cap with AT&T's laptop connect plan

If you think you need a netbook to replace a smartphone, you need to reevaluate what you do on the go.

Who actually buys a smart phone?

Oh let me check my email and post on facebook about the christmas traffic. That was totally worth the 2.5gran contract.

Some New Zealanders managed to pull it off. I don't see why I can't.

There are many like it, but this one is mine. My Iphone is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I master my life. My Iphone, without me, is useless. Without my Iphone, I am useless. I must fire my Iphone true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me.

My smart phone (previously an iPhone, now a Droid) allows me to travel without having to bring a laptop with me, for the most part. Unless I need to be writing code on the road it is all I need. I can view and edit Office docs, SSH into my servers, do personal and work email and browse the web as if I was on a computer. When Flash is enabled on the Droid it will basically provide the complete package.

Funnily enough I think the iPhone is too big.

Your setup should work.
3G dongle, bluetooth headset plus skype is a pretty standard setup. My sister in law uses something similar (on a desktop though).

Theres a model on Fujitsus page with integrated 3G broadband.
