This is absolutely over the top. Double taxes for those unvaccinated? JHC. This affects a very small portion of the population, but thats not the point.

Rhode Island has the highest rate of individuals who are vaccinated against COVID-19 of any state in the country, according to the New York Times. An estimated 95% of its residents of all ages have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to the outlet's tracker.
"Any person who violates this chapter shall be required to pay a monthly civil penalty of fifty dollars ($50.00) and shall owe twice the amount of personal income taxes as would otherwise be assessed pursuant to chapter 30 of title 44. All employers must require proof of compliance," the bill said.

What say you?

Rhode Island bill would double income taxes for unvaccinated people (msn.com)

edit: Enforcement will be a major issue

For the most part, they never did give people incentives to get vaccinated. Going all mandate based was a harebrained decision, especially since they had next to no enforcement of the mandates. I would instead just make all tax credits and deductions optional: get the vaccine and you get to use the tax credits and deductions. Plain and simple. If people want the option to harm others, might as well make them pay a bit for that (and partially offset the massive government costs associated with the hospital bills stemming from that choice).

I'm absolutely shocked that the Washington Examiner has you all worked up over a dead bill.

This. Stupid bills get introduced all the time. Thankfully, not too many of them get passed - except in my state Florida. Sigh.

The second sentence of the article is "The bill, which was submitted early last month and appears dead in the legislature..."

I guess if that failed then doing what should be done, revocation of citizenship and deportation isn't coming soon.

Its a dumb bill and I generally disagree with the logic of "well its a dead bill or a non-starter anyway so what does it matter"

Legislators should be taken to task for introducing stupid legislation that isn't going to go anywhere for brownie points with the most extreme elements of their base.

That's fine if it's presented as such, but the OP acts like it's all but signed into law.

The article you posted literally says it's a dead bill.
Indeed it does. But my mindset is what GodisanAtheist said:

I think we all agree, it's a dumb bill. Can we move on? To, you know, actual dumb bills that made through legislature and are impacting millions of people.

No, just too weak, but you are right about the ones that have already passed like some California gun laws. ;)

We could pass laws that for those who do not want a vaccine, for example, they would be forced to take the actual virus instead. Those who didn't die would have the best immunity possible, I would think. That way, instead of threatening the lives of everybody around them they would provide the best possible protection. Logic, right.

I'm sure you wished Andrew Gillum was elected instead.

But is this about "brownie points with the most extreme elements of their base" or rather about sending a message to vaccine-refuseniks that many people are not happy about their choices? I mean, I think it's a silly proposal, but isn't social pressure one tool for persuading people? And even the suggestion of such a bill could cause some people to rethink their reluctance to be vaccinated.

There probably needs to be a lot more research and effort put in to understanding vaccine-hesitancy, and thus how to counter it. Seems like an issue with multiple causes.

No incentives? Guess the notion of almost never dying from COVID if vaccinated wasn’t enough of an incentive?

When someone refuses to believe that Covid exists, refuses to believe that it is serious (such as calling it essentially a common cold), or believes that natural immunity lasts forever (a common misconception for any disease that spreads in your body faster than your T and B cells can ramp up to fight it) why would they feel any incentive to get vaccinated?
