oh no i aint disapointed in the game...it kicks a$$.....but it is jus barely playable on my rig which is as follows

XP2000
512 DDR266
9500pro

the demo played ok after a bit of fine tuning but settings in game were reasonable.

the full game however is different....i have everything on NORMAL except for physics detail which is on LOW!! im running 1024x768 with NO AA OR AF!!!

playin in onslaught mainly and some levels play well-ish....others are as if the computer is stuttering all the time...and doin 15fps!!!

have jus done a bios reset after a failed overclock, but everything is as it before it went down. same 3D mark 01 and 03 scores

I read somehwere that turning off pre-loading models helps a lot.

Hmm, I wonder if preloading the models/skins is what's causing my rig w/1GB ram to use all available memory.

Think it would be a good idea to turn this off for online games? There was a question in that thread worded in a similar manner, "I don't think turning off the feature that loads all player skinds when going into a level is worth it if you play multiplay. Can you imagine being in the middle of a shotting war and some new guy joins the server with a skin no one has used yet - and you get a hiccup as your system loads it?"

I guess this would depend on your harddisk speed and more importantly how big these models are. If I can squeeze in a game this weekend I'll give it a try.

Man, something is seriously wrong with your system. My little brother plays it just fine on his system, and it's a 2500XP, 1gb ram, Radeon 7500.

a lot of people don't notice dips of low framerate, epic makes games for that type of people.

I was able to get playable frames @ 1280x1024 (visual IQ not sacrificed) with the demo in deathmatch with my 64MB Radeon 8500 (275/275). Worse video card, but the rest of the system is better with a 2.3GHz Barton on a 176MHz FSB with 512MB of PC2700 @ 176MHz as well, dual channel (NF7-S mobo). I'd upgraded that system from a 1700+ Palomino @ 1.46GHz and a KR7A mobo, and between the boost in CPU and FSB speed, major differences were made in most all of my games. I'm thinking the CPU should be pretty good, the PC2100 is definately not helping though. It does smell like a configuration problem though, you should be able to run the game with playable frames and a good amount of visual IQ.

Turn off preloading of player skins and voice recognition. The game is a RAM hog, anything you can do to free some up will help. You should be able to get ok frames with that setup, but it ain't gonna be silky smooth.

The games looks really good. I got it set on highest, and my little Ti200 works just fine. But I have a 2.8c backing it up and only 512 megs of ram.

Remember that the full version uses much higher resolution textures than the demo.

The biggest hit on performance is texture detail and shadows I have found. The higher rez texutres look really sweet though. Your system should run it fine, you just need to play around with some settings.

Try this:

Step 1: Download O&O CleverCache
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download1548.html

Step 2: Install it and run it.
Go to the advanced tab and set absolute maximum to 65470, relative to avail. memory 20, and for file cache checking check file usage every 1000ms. Apply.

Step 3: Go back to the general tab and click the play icon if you need to to make sure it's running, then load up UT2K4 and enjoy the smoothness.

I have only been playing with this for an hour, so these may not be optimal settings, but as it is the difference is like night and day. Seems Windows file cache is caching all those textures as the level loads, so in reality they exist twice in memory - in the file cache and the game's memory footprint - thus taking up more space than needed. Windows compounds the problem by being stingy about giving up the space the file cache is taking up in RAM so XP and UT end up duking it out for memory. This will keep the file cache at a respectable level and the result is drastic. It cut my loading time in half, I've been able to crank the textures back up, and when I exit I don't have to wait an eternity for my desktop to redraw.

That did actually seem to help, maybe it's just psychological though, but maybe not.
Cheers!

I was running the game on a similar setup, P4 willy 2ghz with 512meg rambus and a slightly overclocked 9500pro. the game was running pretty well with everything set to normal and running it at 800x600 with no AA or AF. I was getting frame rates in the 30-40 and dips into the 20's with heavy action. I just upgraded the cpu to a 2.6ghz and I kept the res the same but moved the details to high and still no AA or AF. Now I get frames in the 60-70 and dips to 40's in heavy action. I still have ocational pauses in the game when it's caching info, I'm thinking of upgrading to a full gig on memory so the game doesn't dip into the swap file anymore....

This is a beast of a game. It runs fairly decently on my P4-1.8A with 512mb DDR333 and a 9800Pro. But I have a new P4-3.06 on it way(arrives thursday) that should make a world of difference. :D

UT2004 seems to be very very cpu intensive.

BTW, the demo for UT2004 runs a lot smoother than the retail version. Supposedly the textures are a lot huger in the retail and then there are all the extra characters that need to be loaded into the memory.

i don't see how many people are having problems with this game. i have a poor college student system...

1.4 ghz athlon
512 pc 133
gf4 mx440

granted the settings are not cranked up but i still get a solid 50-55 fps at 1024x768 and it looks great. i am happy because this is really the only game i play...
