LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - For the second time in three months, a 16-year-old California girl who lost a leg in an accident has had her artificial limbs stolen.

Melissa Huff, an Arcadia High School student who uses a $16,000 prosthetic limb to play softball for the school team and another one, valued at $12,000, for everyday use, said both were taken from her bedroom Tuesday.

"I was picking up my little brother from school when my mom called me and asked where I left the two prosthetic legs," Huff, who lives in the Los Angeles suburb of Temple City, told Reuters in an interview.

"I knew right then that it had happened again."

Lisa Huff, her mother, said she came home around midday on Tuesday and found the room shared by Melissa and her older sister a mess. Only the prosthetic limbs were missing.

Police say they were talking to the girl's friends, neighbors and relatives for information about the missing legs.

In November, thieves broke into the Huff residence and took just her prosthetic limb. After that incident, Melissa's prosthetist and a local real estate company donated about $16,000 for a new limb.

The stolen limb was discovered in the teenager's backyard about a month ago, apparently thrown there by the thieves.

Melissa lost her real leg two years ago when a driver accidentally ran into her as she stood in front of her middle school.

She said she intends to get back on the field this week and just practice throwing until she gets another prosthetic limb.

What kind of people steal someones plastic legs..that is just disgusting... I hope someone runs the person over with a car..a few times... so we can steal his wheelchair one day.
 
I feel little in the way of sympathy for anyone that would do this. When they find them, they need to be beaten about the face with a large stick.

I'm partial to the idea of dousing the thief's / thieves' head(s) in gasoline and torching them. If you douse the flame at just the right moment, they'll live but be horrifically scarred for life. I also like the idea of removing mens' organ. The idea of castration has been around for a long time, but I think a penisectomy would be a much more effective way to make someone's life hell; they'd still have the urge but no means of fulfilling it. Not that I've given this much thought...

It doesn't matter who you consider doing this to, you are a sick person. But I have read far worse stuff here.

right. but a person that steals someones leg is special. they need special punishment. i think what Rbachman suggested fits fine.
 
I thought those were custom made? So there isn't any use to other people? If so, they maybe stealing it for sh!ts and giggles (since they threw the limbs on her backyard the first time). Either way, someone should surgically remove their legs for wooden pegs.
 
That makes me sick to the stomach.
I hope these thiefs suffer for it.

Nothing barbaric as others have mentioned (some of you should be in prison or a mental assylum). But a prison sentance spanning across at least a half a decade should serve them well.
 
yes, the legs are completely built for the person, hence the cost.

depending upon the type, there are all kinds of differences and they can be damn costly.

fvcking thiefs.
 

Terrible story. But have you considered that maybe this family had a shvtty HMO or was not covered for the cost for the leg and maybe tried to scam the system? I know I would.
