I just ordered Windows XP Professional from amazon.com. As soon as I got it, I installed it over my previously installed copy and my computer would not work at all. I kept getting this svchost error and the RPC service would fail, restarting my computer. Anyways, I decided to just format my hard drive and go fresh. So I did, and I just got back from work and as soon as my screen saver turns off I get the same error. It hasn't plagued me as much as yesterday but I feel like I'm running on an unsafe machine. Any help guys??

Thanks for replying. I checked out that website. I didn't go as far as they said, but it gave me an idea of what to do. I had about a minute each time before my computer would restart, so in those one valuable minute intervals I would install different XP updates and also Spybot and Ad-Aware. I don't know what XP security update fixed it but now my computer runs fine. Spybot and Ad-aware didn't really find anything but some cookies. Thanks again. I'm happy on my computer again.

"They" is me 😀 and I'm glad you got it beaten. I suggest hooking yourself up with a $40 router of some sort and it couldn't hurt to enable the Windows Firewall either. And of course get some antivirus software, you're not up against mere spyware here... it's worms. I used Norton 2005 trialware recently and I liked it, if you want someone to suggest a particular antivirus for you.
