I also loved that video where the pilot flew low over a car or pickup truck driving down the runway so that someone on it could pull down the landing gear manually.

I'm not volunteering for that job.

That was a piper arrow up in alaska, and I seem to recall they used an audi with a sunroof for the chase car. It took several atempts to get it all together. And large juevos.

About this video: I have about 1000 hours in that type. The gear system is very reliable, but there is one little bellcrank that is a real PITA to get at. If it fails, that is what you get. We remove ours quite frequently for inspection:D

lol didnt think that they'd have news coverage for a failed landing gear.. Hey skyking, I fly the fixed gear planes and am getting my complex rating atm. However, I'm a little apprehensive about the landing gear failing and having similar probs.. Could you shed some light on how you deal with that? :p

It is all laid out in procedures specific to the type of aircraft.

there is another one with a beech and all 3 up
it is similar but better imo the pilot kept it dead centerline all the way with no gears heh, it was amazing

I broke this story here when it happened in fact. :p

Ya I remember watching that live on TV here. Impressive to see how sturdy that landing gear is. What's even more crazy is that the passengers in the plane were watching themselves live on TV since each seat has DirecTV. I bet their ticket sales increased after that...

They re-enacted it on Rescue911 years ago, if I recall correctly.

It is all laid out in procedures specific to the type of aircraft.

How often do problems with the landing gear typically occur?

Type not being the main factor, landing gear MTBF is hard to determine since the system has many components. High failure items are typically life-limited and more frequently inspected. But parts can break and pilots can make errors.

Train train train. Then, train some more.

I've had one in 2000 hours and 22 years. It was caused by a pilot error on a previous flight, and the net result was the gear failed to retract. That's not much of an issue:)
