I've been told too much thermal paste = death..so i went conservative...

I used the "one line down the middle in the right direction" method for the E6400.

I've been getting idle temps on my cores at 45 so says coretemp..

the room ambient temp is 22C

and i suppose i need to show my pictures...what picture hosting website is good?

Seems a *tad* warm even for that slight overclock, how much did you put? I usually go with a blotch about the size of a grain of rice.

oh. and i took off the OC...just to let you know. its back to 2.13 GHz. (which just goes to show how overly warm it is...)

First, I'm surprised at your diligence with taking photos for something as minor as applying thermal paste.

Second, the amount you applied is just a tad lean on the side of "just about right." But maybe you should've spread it around. You really might want to check your mountings, but unless I take more time to look at your case and other aspects, those also may affect idle temperatures.

thanks bonzai...

its just been frustrating with so many versions of how people apply their grease and the fact that my HSF is sub-par, and so many other factors like airflow that have been causing high CPU core temps...

oh and then theres the fatttty dilema concerning which program to use for reading temps..which drove me off the wall. (i couldn't tell if people reporting insanely low temps like 28C were using their BIOS readings or from Coretemp)

I'll try and recheck the mountings w/o trying to take it off...

edit..:

i suppose the AS5 hasn't set either...so...

Slightly more AS5 than I used

But FWIW..I have 3 e6600..one is a L628A266 that idles at 40-42 C with 1.5Von WCing...loaded at 58C..so the key is the delta on load temps IMHO and max load temps

Also my L629F221 idles at 32/33C with 1.4v and loads in the 55-56 range

Some of the C2D run warm at idle....some have poor IHS contact between HS/CPU becasue they are concave IHS

Check load temps ..see where you are at

C2D temps can be a real conundrum

It's risky to spread it around since you can create air pockets doing this. If you apply the thermal paste in middle the heatsink will spread is much more evenly then you could by hand. Don't pull the heatsink off once you have applied pressure and try to reseat it without reapplying new paste since this can also create air pockets. Air pockets are the absolute worst thing you can have between a heatsink and a cpu.

alrighty then...my peak at load temps settles around 63-65C measured with coretemp.

the ambient temperature being around 21C

That's a really high temp for such a low OC. Something's gotta be up.

I'm on an E6420, running 1.42v at 3.2ghz; my load temps (ambient about 28C) don't go above 55C on a Big Typhoon with an Antec TriCool on Medium.

well i've been told my HSF (thermaltake i1) isn't of the highest quality...i'm thinking about going with an AC Freezer 7 Pro.

That looks like a little too much to me!

Just remove the sink and inspect to see if the paste has spread or not.
You will probably see that some of it has squeezed out of the sides, which is a sign that you have put too much.

If the paste has not spread, that is a sign that the sink does not make good contact with the CPU.

If the paste has spread and has covered most of the CPU, that means you have the right amount.

Then, clean both the CPU and the sink with alcohol. Apply paste and install again.

That looks about right, but I don't like the way it's parted in the middle (probably due to the syringe). Ideally it's an uninterrupted bead.

I would guess it's because the interface isn't good. Concave IHS, concave HS base, etc.

Okay. Then I'm probably looking at a bad quality HSF, bad contact between CPU and HSF, or just bad luck. = \
