This is funny - Keeping tech jobs at home.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development, whose mission is to help unemployed Indianans (including those who have lost jobs because their work was contracted overseas), awarded a $15.2 million computer services contract to Tata American International Corp., to hire 65 programmers to work on the agency's information software starting in November. Two weeks later, state officials canceled the contract after realizing that Tata is a subsidiary of a Bangalore, India, company and that the 65 programmers were being brought in from India. And that is another fine example of our government at work.

I think it's a great example. They goofed, realized their mistake, and looked out for the Americans.

Shouldn't have goofed to begin with.

As the result, now they'll end up paying twice as much, use up all their funds and close doors by the end of 2004 😉

So, instead of congratulating them on correcting their error, lets dis them for making the mistake in the first place?

Bingo! Someone should be fired over this, but probably not gonna happen.

You're joking, right? Haven't you made a mistake in your life before? Stuff happens, you realize the error, you learn rom it. How old are you?

From a Washington Post article:

In November, Indiana Gov. Joseph Kernan canceled a $15 million contract with a firm in India to process state unemployment claims. The contract was given to a U.S. firm that will charge $23 million. Because of this 53 percent price increase, there will be 8 million fewer state dollars for schools, hospitals, law enforcement, etc. And the benefit to Indiana is . . . what?

I know I've made mistakes, but none of them involved $15.2 million. When you are giving a company that much money for contract, and your company specializes in keeping work within the state, nevermind the country!!!, someone maybe should have looked at the background of the company they were signing the contract to.

And how/why are we supposed to know that? I didn't know until I read the article. Can you name me the largest companies in Japan, China, Austrailia, the UK, and Germany off the top of your head?

Your right, not everyone is expected to know who/what Tata is (well unless your Indian, in which case its a household name).

But I think the issue is that you would assume that the people responsible for this would have researched on the company that they are tendering a $15.2 million contract to.

If I was gonna give you $15Million for your services, I'd sure as hell research your company and see where your based from and your previous/current clients and such.

btw, Tata is a large conglomerate, much like Mitsubishi. They delve in everything from producing cars to managing tea farms to providing IT support. They have also have HUGE research houses.. <which interests me the most>
