Ok, this is the first I've ever heard of this, and quite frankly, when someone told me about it, I thought he was 100% full of crap. No questions about it, it would never work. Impossible. But I tried it and I'd be damned, it WORKS!

Note: This only works if you have a car that you can unlock the doors with a remote. So basically any modern day car. You're out of luck if you have a 1970 Chevelle. 😛


So here is how to unlock your car when you accidentally leave your keys in your car. Grab your cell phone (or borrow someone else's phone) and call the person that can get a hold of your spare key (remote). Have them hold the remote close to the mic of their phone and hit the unlock button (I usually just hold the button down or keep tapping it). Before they hit the "unlock" button hold your phone close to the door of your car. When they hit the unlock button it should unlock your door.

Pretty cool.
 
No, it doesn't. Cell phone microphone and speakers cannot capture frequencies that high and the antenna can't attenuate those frequencies either.

Listen, I seriously did not believe it myself. No way did I think it would work. But I tried it and it did. I tried it on a 1998 Grand Prix and a 2000 something Acura. My friend tried it on his wife's 2010 (?) Honda Odyssey and it didn't work though. I haven't tried it on my Mustang yet.

I was in the middle of the first floor at work, and my friend was in the parking lot. No WAY would the signal have reached the car on its own. I then tried it at my parent's place and I was in the house waaaay in the back room and the car was in the driveway. Failed the first time, tried it again and it worked.
 
Tried it a while back with my uncle's truck from WELL out of range of the key fob (about a mile away). It did not work.

I do not believe you, JackBurton. The RF signal can't be transmitted by the speaker of a cell phone.

Edit: It's entirely possible your remotes have much longer ranges than you think. The remote for my mom's Eclipse with a brand-new battery, has a good several hundred foot range.

He was far enough to be out of range. I thought the same thing too, "maybe I have a super remote and it's going through a concrete wall and steel doors on top of a distance that was definitely out of range." But there was no way the remote could have worked from within the building at the distance I was at. I then tried it at my parent's place, and went waaay back to the back room, so it would have to go through several walls and the outer brick wall not to mention the distance to unlock the car in the driveway. No way I could have done that with just the remote alone.


The guy that told me about this said it isn't 100&#37;, so it may not work on all cars, but the two I tried worked. And like I said, it didn't work on my friends Honda. I'd be interested to see if anyone wants to try it, post back if it does or doesn't work for them. I'll try it on my wife's 2011 Mustang from work today and post the results.
 
You could just record a video of your key fob on your smartphone. As long as you don't lock your phone in the car with your keys, you'll always be able to open the door!

Yes, according to this whole idea, that should work...

In fact, if you can record someone else, you should be able to enter their car.
 
Its not being transmitted like that (picked up by the mic in one and played out correctly over the speaker on the other phone).

How were you and/or your friend holding the remote?

This makes me think of the episode of Top Gear where Jeremy shows holding the remote down he can't get it to work from a certain distance. He then puts the remote up to his head and gets it to work.

Dude, this is why you have to replace your microphone in your doors whenever the remote range gets crappy.

Also, if you whistle a certain frequency, you can unlock your door too.

AND, if you play a specific sequence of tones, you can even make free calls anywhere in the world!!!

A cell phone speaker can not transmit radio waves in that frequency. Can't. Period.

Mr. Burton is full of crap, or his 'experiment' is complete baloney.

First of all, the speaker in a cell phone does not have the frequency response to measure radio waves. Secondly, even if it did (which it physically does not), the codecs used by the telephone companies are designed to specifically filter out all noise above and below the range of human hearing to preserve bandwidth.

Burton, go back to ATOT with this bullshit.
