You could argue that the processor is the most expensive part, if you went with the best one out at any given time.

For example the new AMD 64 4800+ is $1,001.

Now thats easily the most expensive part.

easy, pretend that a $200 video card is the top of the line piece of equipment, convince yourself of this and your wallet will go far

Go look up the highest end AMD processors, they run in the same range or more in some cases. Harddrives can be expensive too, especially SCSI or those gigantic 400GB SATA ones. Get a professional soundcard and you're looking at $200+ easy, same with a good set of surround speakers. Cases can run over $200 without a psu, and those can run at least $100+.

Video cards can be expensive, but no more so than other parts, and same as other parts you never need the highest end to do what you want.

Excuse me? The 512mb 6800 Ultra was $1000. A 512mb 7800GTX will be $1200. Gfx card and proc are about equal in expense. Buy a $1000 proc, you might as well get a $1000 video card. BUt buy a reasonable $300 proc, get a 6800 GT for $300.

The difference is while your $150 Athlon 64 Venice is close to and can be overclocked to match your Athlon64 4000+, your $150 video card is a piece of trash compared to the 7800s.

Are you aware of how much processing power these cards have now???

They bring a whole new meaning to GPU (Graphic Processing Unit)

You could just stick with a $15 card that can barely process more than text if you'd like.
