This is called "expertise"?

Gartner. IDC. These names are often used in conversations around the water cooler. Their opinions trickle down into mainstream media. Market analysis firms which provide regular reports on the state of the IT industry and make predictions for the next period.

And yet, I have to wonder... how good are these supposed "experts"? What they say can actually influence the world. Yet, more and more I have the impression that they're clueless. Witness the repeated predictions about the demise of the PC.

Or this article, in which a Gartner analyst says "If you have an old PC - older than three years - you will likely have very low specs on the device and will not be able to benefit from many new features."

And there's more... Take this former friend of mine. Very ambitious. Very attractive. Married to a nerd. Started out as a cashier in a bank. Convinced the manager that the bank should pay her MBA (!). Stayed at the bank while completing her studies. Then worked for a DVD-by-mail company, which got her into high-tech. Began working in sales for Sharepoint/Great Plains. Suddenly she moves to Micro$oft and cuts out all contacts. Divorces her husband, gets the house and the Mercedes (!). Stops talking to old friends and acquaintances and disappears completely. Then, out of the blue, LinkedIn informs me she's at IDC.

I can only shake my head at what passes for "expertise" these days...
