This is bad, I feel depressed now that my system upgrade is done.

OMG, I feel depressed now. My system upgrade, the one I fantasized about for a few months and then spent a month doing, is done and over with. The only thing left to do is to buy more memory (I need another 512MB Corsair XMS stick) and a faster video card. The video card I'll buy is not out yet (hoping to God that the NV35 is a viable product upgrade from my GF4 Ti 4200 128MB) and the memory isn't desperately needed as of now so...

I think the PC upgrade thing is an addictive activity and I got hooked again. :( Before you say it, I do have a life. I work full time, I am a half-time college student, and I am a husband and father. I don't get a lot of time for my computers but I do enjoy whatever time I DO get.

Your thoughts?

Well Tao, I've been following your posts, and you should be happy with your new system!

I do know what you mean, though. Have you ever known anyone who builds hot rods? The same thing happens, when it's done, what do many of them do? SELL IT and start all over! (I'm not suggesting that, just an analogy) Then there's the guys who never finish...on purpose! I know a guy who's been working on one car for 10 years...it's been 95% done twice, then he went off in another direction.

I think a lot of computer geeks are the same way. You get so wrapped up in it, and then it's "done". I felt that way about my system until the T-breds came out. It was back to the planning, buying, tweaking, etc....

Now I'm building a 2nd system just for a netsurfing machine after winning a case in a contest. (It also gives me an excuse to buy an 8RDA+ and some Twinmos!!)

Have you modded the case?

If not, do it.

If so, do it some more (or do mine).

Have you cleaned up all the wires?

There's always something you can do, or do better. You can only sit back and admire your handiwork for so long.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Blooz1, I am very satisfied with the computer. It is running great as it is, the additional memory and the upgraded video card are future proofing for up and coming video games. :) Your comments are very accurate to my situation btw.

Viremia, my wiring has been clean for years now. I used to build PLC and DCS cabinets when I was an Instrument Tech 6 or so years ago. My wiring is really anal but nice. Case modding is something I want to do but there are so many nice pre-built cases that modding isn't even necessary any more. I have my eyes on a few but they are expensive. When my kids are outgrowing their clothes and shoes every other month it's hard to justify spending a few hundred dollars on a case. But I dream...

ChampionAtTufshop, those are some serious mods but they go beyond what I am interested in doing. All my work so far has been with stock components, easy to find and replace. But I have thought about a phase change cooling system if my Tbred "B" overclock falls short when certain new games come out. How much are they running ATM?

Get some new games and some cheap 5.1 speakers ( I just got the z640s=$49.41 after rebate) and am having a blast with my new and improved rig :)

I see why you aren't so happy, you spent way too much and the speed didn't impress you all that much. I feel for you, why not buy the cheapest component can afford and also get ones thats fast enough for what you do such as 1.1ghz-1.4ghz :D and cheapest motherboard you can find. They work well but aren't high performance.:frown: also, try not to spend too much time building one pc. heck, if you can get them cheapest, the better. They are obsolete component but with a fast processor, they will work wonders for you. Want impressive sound? get a receiver for a mere 50-60 bucks, hook it up to your soundcard, and they will rock n' roll! :D

blasphemy!

lol
its like with cars
you want the best, even though you cant even begin to top it out
i mean the fastest ive gone is like 250ish km/h in a 110km/h highway....the top end is still far away, but you cant reach it without getting an ass raping ticket lol

...except in computers, you can top it out cuz thres noone to stop ya (shut that little voice up in your head and you are good to go! heh)

its the thrill of buying something new i think
i konw i felt the same when i got my new comp stuffz together haha ;)

Hmm, I'm not sure but I don't think that's it. The speed is amazing but I want to do MORE systems. :Q That's my problem. I got a lot of satisfaction from souping this one up. I guess it's like a drug.

lolyeah
you get high once, you feel good
you get high more, you feel good...but a bit less good cuz of normal body adaptation to the drug
so you do more cuz you love the feeling
....eventually you od and die lol

just with computers, you only end up killing wallet, not yourself
(with exception to psu tweaking lol ;) )

nope, psu don't kill your wallet. Your ears thank you once you bring the fan speed down too!

PS--ok kiddies, don't try modding your psu unless you know how much current those big caps pack!

Yep, depressing. Probably a good thing that I don't get enough money to be able to spend any on my computer, or I would be spending it all on my comp.

Tao, I have the same feelings. I spent months debating whether to upgrade my Gateway 700Mhz PIII or build a new rig from scratch. I chose to build new (my first build). Asus a7n8x Deluxe, XP2200+, 2x256mb Crucial XP2700, Antec SLK3700 case w/psu, Gainward Geforce4 Ti4200 128mb. I've spent the last 3 weeks working out the bugs (sound, network, bios update). Now I have that empty feeling like I want to do it all over again. Hmmm, there's still that old Gateway....;)

I don't have any buyers remorse, I just feel robbed that my fun is over. That's what my wife said when I mentioned this to her.

And I'm not allowed to upgrade her system, she likes it just the way it is. :( :)

LOL! Now you must get Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries, set Difficulty to "Elite," and try out the Tharkad -- Overlord mission. That will definitely take your mind off your woes :D Talk about a hellacious running battle... I estimate about 55 'mech, helo, track and turret combatants (thankfully, some are friendlies), the final one being an Overlord dropship that can hit you from 1.2 kilometers with its six Light Gauss Rifles. Definitely a good workout for a fast system, with all that AI going on :D

Tip: if you ever get that far, get down in the gulley to the left, and keep dinking away at the Overlord's tippie-top while not exposing yourself to any other part of it... the guns are very high up on its fuselage :Q I favor quad Clan Extended-Range PPCs on a Sunder or Gladiator, with as many heatsinks as you can fit.

Tip #2: F10, F1. This causes all your buddies to focus their firepower on your present target if feasible.

Tip #3: chain-fire the PPC's to quickly take out enemy helos and tracks, one PPC is enough to neutralize any of them other than the Demolisher II's. This keeps your pals from wasting time trying to take out light targets when they should be focusing on 'mechs.

:Q and now your username has true meaning to me. :)

Pete, it is a really fast machine (aside from a "slower" video card). I'll be keeping it. Nice try though. :)

Well, she should be grateful you haven't attempted to upgrade her! Or at least her "system". That could be real expensive.
