For all of you AT'ers who've probably never seen one, this is an AMC Rambler(hence my username).

This was the car I drove to college for 3 years before I inherited my mom's old Honda Accord. I wouldn't sell it because I wanted restore it some day when I had some time. I started working on it last May. I took the inline six that it had and replaced it with a 287ci V8 to give it a little more juice. Still have lots more work to do, exhaust system, body work, painting and interior. But what do you think?

I saw one two weeks ago in the mall parking lot, the plates were "AMC YA". The exhaust note was very, very nice as it went by.

Here's a picture of the 287 before I worked on it. I had to buy a whole parts car to do the swap but man was I glad I did. I didn't realize exactly how many parts were involved.

I am kidding about uncle buck but my buddies dad had one, sold it to some guy who wanted to redo it, defiantly not that color though 😉.

One of the guys near my house is an AMC guy and has a mid 60s 2 door rambler and a gremlin both daily drivers. I'd love to have an AMX and I have always wanted to soup up an Eagle 🙂.

One of the cars I learned to drive on (the stick) was a 62 Rambler American S/W.
While in the service I (for a very short time owned a 62 Classic S/W.
The best car I ever owned was a 69 Javelin. like the red one shown, but it was the green color notice the spoiler across the back of the roof!
I also owned a 72 Hornet X runabout (one of only TWO I ever saw with a V-8).

I'm a BIG AMC fan!

Having been a child of the late-60s/early-70s, I am quite familiar with these cars. The AMC Rambler went through some major design changes on the body panels from the earlier versions - which had fins on the rear fenders similar to a '57 Chevy.

My personal favorite was the AMC Javelin from the 69-70 time-frame. Clearly, these cars were built as competition for the Mopar muscle cars and vehicles from GM.

I grew up next to a family that owned many AMC Ramblers. I owned a '68 Rambler for a junk-yard runner car but got rid of it because I couldn't stand the vacuum wipers----yes, in 1968, AMC was still using vacuum wipers instead of electric that EVERYONE else in the industry was using.

Javelins and AMXs were very nicely styled cars and very quick. Almost bought a Gremlin with the V-8 option in 1973.....it was very fast for its price, but the glove box door fell off during the test drive and I walked away from the purchase.

Does anyone remember the Rambler Scrambler? In 1974, I saw one in Wash. D.C. put a hurting on a Chevelle 396.....the Scrambler had studded snow tires on it and it was hilarious watching it chew up and spit out asphalt as it trounced the Chevelle.

Who knew there were this many AMC fans on Anandtech? Cfour that's one sweet Javvy of your pops. I hope you take care of it as good as he did when you get it. Does it have a 343, 360, 390 or 401? I don't know if he knows about it yet but there's a good AMC site I post on with lots of experienced AMCers at www.amcforum.net/forums/. I got a lot of help from them when I was putting my engine in. They can also help find parts too. He may want to check it out.
You guys are right about the AMX's and Javelins though. Some of the sweetest muscle cars ever made. I especially like the body styles on the 68-70s models although the humpsters like Cfour's 74 Jav do have a certain appeal to them as well. Glad to see there are still people around who know what an AMC is.

My first car was an AMC Concorde. When I was 6 months old, my parents wanted a car. My dad walked to a car dealer, and bought the first car he saw. He drove it for 15 years and gave it to my sister. She drove it for 3 years and gave it to me. Then I had it for a couple of years. That thing was probably the ugliest car I've ever seen. Poop brown color (everyone in town called it the SH!T car), tons of rust, fake leather that looked fake, and a AM radio that only half worked. At least it got me around (though at like 12 mpg or so it was an enormous cost to drive). It leaked oil from the day my dad bought it - the dealer repaired it ever couple of months until the warranty ran out and it did nothing. My parents tried a few other shops to no avail - it would always leak oil. I ended up just lugging a box of oil in the trunk and every 300 miles or so dumping in another quart. Never needed an oil change that way...

I put disk brakes and a super T10 on my Javelin that came off a Hurst S/C Rambler Scrambler. Those were BAD ASS. 340 horse 390, 4.11 posi, rack and pinion, super T10 with Hurst Competition plus linkage. They also made a larger version with the same running gear based on the Matador body called "The Machine".

Do you remember the movie Uncle Buck? 😀

It definitely has potential, just don't give up on it. I know too many people that intend on restoring cars, work on them for a couple months, and end up selling them 🙁

My first girlfriends father only drove Rambler Ambassadors circa 1961 or so. Poor suspention but killer engines.

I had an AMC 68 Javelin with the 390 for 7 years till the divoce took it away. Hot car. Wish I still had it. Super looks.

Friends had AMXs.

I bought a 1968 Rambler for $300 and drove it for a short while in the late eighties. I sold it to my friend for $400. It had all the weakest options... 6 cylinder, 3 speed, etc. But it still had that vintage Rambler body.

I've always been an AMX fan. I bought an AMX/Javelin themed windbreaker jacket right off of a lady's back in a grocery store once. It had pictures of the cars on it. I just couldn't live without it. I opened up my wallet and asked if she would take $20 for it. She did. I also have an unopened 1969 AMX model car kit. It's just a small <$10 plastic model car. It's still in shrink wrap and I've had it for 15 years.

One time my uncle let me drive his 1969 AMX with a 390. I took it to a friends house that was also into muscle cars. I didn't call him or nothing. But he saw/heard me coming. He was running to the car in the driveway before I even fully stopped. He hopped into the passenger seat and I found the straightest road I could find in the area.

The car went to 110mph without hesitation. I wasn't supposed to be doing that (of course) so I backed off. That was such a cool car.

I bought a new 1980 Eagle Wagon for my wife and she loved it. At that time it was the only automatic 4-wheel drive available. Scubys were only stick shift and Jeeps were not viable options for us then. The car had some quirks with CV joints and valve cover gaskets but was reliable.

I wound up giving it to my Dad in 1996 when we bought our first Caravan. He drove it for years.

BTW I remember the AMX being a fast car but treacherous during the Michigan winters.

I think the Hurst Scrambler was also one of the fastest Muscle Cars around.
