The moment paraplegic shopper tackled thug who was threatening female assistant

Last updated at 7:14 PM on 10th November 2010

He has been confined to a wheelchair since breaking his back ten years ago.

But when Larry Skopnik saw a customer threatening the shopkeeper at his local store, he didn't let his disabilities get in the way.

Propelling his wheelchair towards the man, Mr Skopnik got him in a headlock, then wrestled him to the ground.

Mr Skopnik had been shopping at the Food Store on Commerical Drive, in Vancouver, when he saw the man attempting to pay with a suspect $50 note.

Cashier Cindy Grewal refused to accept it - at which point the thief charged behind the counter.

'Boom, I tried to grab him,' Mr Skopnik said describing how the weight eventually pulled him out of the chair.

He was able to hold on to the man until two other customers came to his aid.

Mr Skopnik, however, insists that he is not a hero.

'I don't feel like a hero and I'm not really comfortable with this limelight,' he said.

'What made me do that is inside of me. It has nothing to do with disability.'
'Just because I am in a chair doesn't mean I can't stand up and do something righteous and do the right thing.

'Afterwards I thought about a knife or something.
'But at the time, it was just about helping my friend the clerk.

'I'm 200-plus pounds, six foot three. It's just in my blood to stand up for the small person.'

Mr Skopnik has become an internet sensation with thousands of people posting messages of support on Facebook.

Ms Grewal said she was very grateful to her customer.
'My heart goes to him,' she said. 'He didn't even think for a moment that he can't even walk - he nabbed that guy.'

Where is this definition? I am getting kind of tired news places stating that it's an internet sensation. It's like they're invading my space or something ... haha

Nice to see the disabled guy take him down though.
