SOMERS POINT, N.J. (CBS/AP) ? A 20-year-old has pleaded guilty to needlessly killing an animal for running over some baby ducks in a Somers Point parking lot.

Steven Davey of Egg Harbor Township was fined more than $1,000. He can get some of that reduced by volunteering at an animal shelter.

An SPCA officer says Davey swerved around other cars that had stopped for the ducklings in August and ran over them.

x2 for these kids

Four Australian teenagers were charged Thursday with attacking an almost blind greater flamingo that is believed to be the oldest bird of its kind in the world, police and zoo officials said.

The flamingo's head and beak were injured and it was bleeding from an eye after the attack at Adelaide Zoo that left it in a critical condition, zoo staff said.

"The bird arrived at the zoo in 1933 and was a mature bird at that stage," a spokeswoman for the zoo told AFP. "So although we don't know it's exact age it is at least 75 years old -- much older than they grow in the wild."

The zoo's website describes the bird as "undoubtedly the oldest flamingo in the world," adding that despite its great age its quality of life was very good.

Police said four men aged between 17 and 19 were charged with aggravated ill-treatment of an animal and released on bail to appear in court at a later date.

Several people at the zoo at the time of the attack had spoken about the incident with staff and officers wanted to interview them, a spokesman said.

The elderly bird, described as unafraid of humans, had a habit of coming close to the edge of his enclosure.

Known only as Flamingo One, he was sedated after the attack and was taken to the animal hospital where his condition was reported to be improving.

"He's just an icon, he's the oldest resident of the zoo, he's just a symbol of the beauty of nature," said the zoo's chief executive Chris West.

Zoo officials said the shocking attack had left them concerned for the wellbeing of a second flamingo -- the older bird's only companion for more than 50 years.

Wow, what a bunch of assholes. I was never this dumb at 17-19, sure I did some stupid things, but just out of lack of experience with life, nothing malicious like that. Scary...

I've never been able to understand why a human would want to abuse any animal.

Poor baby ducks!

This is where the "eye for an eye" punishment should kick in. Make that jackass cross a busy street with a rope tied around his ankles. Then take a couple of teens ticketed for speeding and tell them that if they hit that assclown, their tickets get thrown out.

I truly believe that in cases like this we ought to be able to subject them to the same level of violence that they inflicted, all the while asking "so, how do YOU like it?"

Yeah we did a ton of stupid shit as teens in HS, but it never involved killing/hurting animals. Instead it was going car sledding and other stupid shit we could have died because of :p

Ehh, the ducklings one isn't that bad since it's no different then hitting a bird while driving or the random Seinfeld episode jogger stepping on them.

The 2nd one is something else.

There was a much worse incident that happened here a few years ago. In Stanley Park there are a lot of flamingoes around a lagoon. Some people took baseball bats to several of them at night, hitting their heads like they were playing tee-ball. They killed something like 10-20 of them this way. It was a major story in the city for several days.

You get fined for running over ducks but not any other various woodland creature? I'm curious if the guy wanted to run over them or was just passing on the right (which isn't legal either). But even then, the guy should just get a ticket for an illegal passing maneuver. Sounds like a bunch of hippies on that court.

The thing is, you don't normally run over birds intentionally.
