Mods? Strict with rules..? Maybe it's just me, but they're a lot more lax now than a couple of years ago.

Nah, I used to get away with much more. Yesterday I got a warning for calling a douchebag "douchebag".

No offense, but you've not even been here a year yet. You don't have a "used to" yet. :p

Anyone who remembers far back, around 2000/2001, can tell you that there used to be a much tighter reign here. Words like "douchebag" were filtered outright, bypassing the language filter was an instant vacation, people were permabanned just for being annoyances to the majority of members, and overall it was a lot less permissive.

On the other hand, the membership was much more tightly-knit, people tended to be more polite, and there was overall more opportunity for deeper discussion while maintaining civility.

That's the most retarded thing I've ever heard.

Honestly though, what's this county jail subnet nonsense? Is AT all of a sudden overrun with inmates at county who want to post on a tech forum?

You guys seriously don't remember the language filter? Having to type "sh*t" or "d@mn" or "fvck" and when using formatting (e.g. "sh[ b][ /b]it", without the spaces of course) to bypass the filter would earn an instant vacation? I'm not that senile yet, am I?

Back when Geekbabe was still Geekbabe and Red Dawn lived in CA? When Linuxboy and Moonbeam engaged in epic philosophical ramblings and HotChic broght reason into the religion threads?

I think one thing in particular that I remember more than others was that at one time we actually had a number of "Den Mothers" that kept some balance and nurturing atmosphere to this place. Wombat Woman, Yeeny/Girl Friday, Isla, HotChick, Hazel, and to some extent Fiddle DD, and Unexpurg8ted (or something close to that) were very frequent contributers and just kept conversations interesting.

This forum is pretty downright horrible to women either assuming they are actually men or falls back to the mob mentality clammoring for pics. We lost out on some key members that sort of held this place together and kept conversations a lot lighter or interesting.

I recall the language filter, but I also remember everyone typing fvck or fsck and not geting insta banned.

I remember trolls getting permabanned for being annoyances to the majority of members instead of allowed to exist as pieces of performance art. But Jerboy was still around for an awful long time, and the butter thread was a long term neffest of hilarity. I remember tongue in cheek moderation.

Maybe the world is just more boring than it was.

Look at computers...the big revolution during the 90s

CDROMS, VGA / SUPERVGA and beyond, AOL Compuserve Prodigy then the INTERNET....

I still have a folder of stuff I downloaded off of AOL in the mid-90s.

In some ways a postage stamp size trailer of "Forget Paris" is cooler to me than youtube.com

Maybe you are senile. Geekbabe was baffled2 ya old fart :p What I miss is some of the drama, like Jerboy, PAB, WW, monel, all them goodies. This is a much more 'sterile' forum now. Too many script kiddies with no depth of personality or vision now.

Dennil just needs to off another soft core porn star, and we will be good to go.

Damnit. For some reason I was thinking that she was baffled2 now and had been Geekbabe in the past.

1) As mentioned by me and others, the PC tweaking and power user community is drying up. There just isn't as much benefit and cost savings like there used to be 10+ years ago overclocking Celeron 300a's or video cards. So we lose new member interest because they aren't seeking out help and getting invovled in the community.

2) Social sites have evolved (or de-evolved in some cases) on internet. Myspace, facebook, and hotspots like 4Channel have stolen many "Off Topic" users from conventional bulletin board formats.

3) We just have a natural attrition of legacy users through various reasons. People that came here years ago are getting older, have families, lose interest, move on to other things, ect.

As far as moderation is concerned, it's just like any sort of policing. It's reactive. Not proactive. And for every person that you make happy, you piss off another. It's a zero sum game. MANY users were fed up with the YAGT and YACT so we spun off those threads to L&R and The Garage. Some people loved it, some hated it. We can't win. Hindsight is always 20/20. Speaking strictly as a member and not a moderator, I LIKE having those threads - as well as P&N stuff funnelled into their own forums. If I want to see it, I'll go there. But I like structured formats even if it does create lower traffic overall.

This forum is a spin off of a hobbist site. If the hobby itself is on the decline, the forum is going to follow that.

To a point this is true.

But at the same time the anonymity went away and along came super bias resulting in a Nanny Police state.

I was on here from the beginning in 1998 until January of this year without ever being "vacationed" and then two more times back to back after that including vacationed for the entire month of May.

That's Ok it made me start my own forums

Hey, be my guest.
Really at this point technology is so fast and so cheap, there is little point to it than a niche hobby. But enjoy it.

There will always be us crazies that spend thousands on custom rigs, latest and greatest, etc.

It's a fun hobby, overclocking, tuning, etc. Just getting unnecessary with the speed of current hardware

The forums are more or less the same as always. I think they've lost a bit of their personal touch as some of the most prominent early members have reduced their posting frequency. But it's more or less the same immature cesspool as always. ;)

I agree that the computer and technology aspects of the forum are less appealing to me than before, as we can all buy super fast and cheap computers these days without having to overclock and active-cool everything in sight. But I still appreciate the discourse of my fellow geeks.

That's because of your slow descent into insanity, Dave. Not the mods.
