This ever happened to you? (dead pc syndrome)

OK problem started about 2 months ago. We had a bad thunderstorm and power flicked off and on. All my electronics turned back on when power resumed, but my PC did not. Fearing the PSU was bad, I switched everything from 2nd rig in sig to first and back, all parts working in 2nd rig, but no boot in 1st rig. (by no boot i mean NOTHING, no fan spins nothing at all)

I pull CMOS battery, put a different one in - nothing
I replace original CMOS battery - PRESTO computer turns on (this is after clearing the CMOS, leaving a battery out over night etc.) This was a 24 hour ordeal.

So for 2 months, no problems at all. Then this morning we lose power again. Power returns, everything turns on except sig rig 1. SO again back to the drawing board. This time skipping all other steps (removing parts and testing them) I try the battery trick again. Nothing. And again. Nothing. For 3 hours I was fiddling with this thing, nothing at all. Then trying to take out the battery for the last time, I noticed a capacitor was really hot to the touch, right under the CMOS.

Feeling around the board a bit more, finding the heat was coming from a tiny black chip right next to the capacitor that was hot. - The USB controller. So I unplug the front panel USB ports from the case - PRESTO - computer turns on. I plug USB header back into MOBO - NOTHING.

Come to find out one of the USB ports in the front of the case somehow got crushed, and was touching the USB port below causing a short circuit.

So if you ever come across a problem like stated above - check all ports for any that are broken or crushed!

Lightning caused your USB port to crush? That's serious lightning. My case's USB ports somehow had a metal clip protruding from the side and I couldn't use them. I had to bend them all back. I seem to remember forcing a Xbox controller into them that had a bent connector? Coincidence? Maybe it is relevant to your situation but then again maybe not.

im guessing the USB was already shorted, and the power surge from the lightning caused the board to do a hard reset, not coming back to life.

USB ports contain a circuit that disconnects power if a short (or excessive load) occurs. Something is wrong with that port. It should have shut off power when shorted.

With all the power saving stuff on computers now, who knows what can go wrong or weird for that matter. I had computer flip on and off before from power. Could not get it to load windows. Turns out i just had to reset bios to default for it to come back on. lol

I have a laptop that won't turn on when a certain USB port is in use (something is plugged into it). Weirdest damn thing. Glad to see you got everything working again! Sometimes it is incredibly hard to troubleshoot these sorts of issues...
