I saw one about a year ago. It was at a car show down in Miami. Sat in the driver's seat and wasn't impressed at all. No question, the car is interesting in some ways. But it's certainly far from a high performance vehicle. The owner said he didn't drive it because it had terrible acceleration and felt like you were trying to drive a Bus that was lower to the ground.. ;) LOL

The first model was to be called the DMC-12. Intended to be a safe and sleek sports car, DeLorean aimed to begin production by the late seventies. Due to money raising and the building of the factory in Northern Ireland, the DMC-12 did not begin production till early 1981. Forced to make decisions to save the company, DeLorean was entrapped by the Government for cocaine trafficking. Acquitted of all charges years later, DeLorean was forced to close the company in late 1982.

Dear Yahoo!:
Whatever happened to John DeLorean after he was busted by the FBI?
Ninh
Dallas, Texas

Dear Ninh:
John DeLorean is famous for three things:

his work on the Pontiac GTO in the 1960s
the gull-wing sports car that he created in the early '80s (used as the time machine in the Back to the Future movies)
his arrest for money laundering and drug trafficking.
The arrest was the result of a U.S. government sting operation. A 1986 trial showed that John DeLorean was a desperate man because of his car company's impending financial collapse, and, as such, wouldn't have committed a crime if he hadn't been enticed by federal agents. This was a violation of the guidelines for federal sting operations, so DeLorean was acquitted of all charges. Unfortunately, his car company had already folded by 1983, and his name was sullied by the arrest.

Since that time, John DeLorean has stayed out of the limelight. He has been married and divorced more than once, and he's currently a bachelor in his 70s. He's been entangled in about 40 legal cases stemming from his company's bankruptcy. He personally declared bankruptcy in September 1999 and was evicted from his 434-acre estate in New Jersey in March 2000, although he is reportedly still living somewhere in New Jersey.

DeLorean's latest project is DeLorean Time. This company sells a high-end watch and has plans to sell new models of DeLorean sports cars in the future.

Neither the cars, nor the company, nor the man had anything to do with the movement of drugs. The drugs in the cars bit is total folklore. The charges resulting from the sting operation were related to conspiracy of money laundering and not of actual drug trafficking, smuggling, using, or otherwise. Although John was arrested with drugs in the hotel room where he was meeting undercover agents (there is an infamous video documenting the arrest), John had nothing to do with the transportation of the substance. In a strange twist, it appears that John was not even using his own money to do the supposed laundering, but monies put up for him by the DEA as part of the sting operation. There are several books devoted to the topic, of which Johns biography details his side of the story.
