this can't be right...: MS's Zune Player will NOT support wma/v/ -drm

specualtion from the Harvard blog:

But let me throw one more possible rationale out there: because Microsoft's "Plays For Sure" WM DRM does not accomodate the Zune sharing feature (and that's just my speculation), they ditched it. In other words, WM DRM failed to accomodate new, emerging, and potentially unforeseen fair uses. The end result is that Microsoft decided to force customers to rebuy their preexisting WM DRMed collections in order to make use of Zune's novel features.

This is incredibly perplexing.

So Zune doesn't claim to be PlaysForSure compatible, and it's not.
What's the big deal? I mean, sure, they're not using their own service, but that's about it.
No one is forcing you to buy Zune, you can buy a different player that is PlaysForSure compatible. They've said it's not PlaysForSure. You wouldn't buy an iPod and expect it to work with PlayForSure.

The only odd part is that MS are not using their own service. There is no "forcing" anywhere.

It's not about forcing playsforsure on anyone. If a player is playsforsure compatible that really doesn't mean didlly if you are going to put mp3s or video on it as it simply needs to meet the format requirement of the player.

The problem is the MS is releasing products that don't even support their own services, therby LOCKING their OWN CUSTOMERS out.

Well that's horrible news 😛

Or NOT. Don't buy DRM music.

I'm all for promoting non-DRM music.
