I've never actually replaced a laptop hard drive before, is it much different than replacing one in a desktop?

It's a lot easier actually. Most of the time the hard drive is hiding behind a bay that you unscrew in the laptop (On the side). Once you have the hard drive out, it's fairly intuitive how to plug the new one in. There may be a connector you have to pull off the old hard drive, and place it on the new hard drive (the pins on the hard drive are delicate but since your is already dead, I wouldn't worry too much about that)

Yeah, I would defindately back up your data. FWIW, I have a desktop that the drive has been giving me a similar SMART error for over a year, and the drive is still working fine.

that may or may not be a bad thing. i've seen S.M.A.R.T. say a drive was going to fail and it ran for another 2 years with no problems. so you never really know, but always err on the side of caution, so back up your stuff. if you know someone with the drive adapters you can probably do a complete xfer to a new drive and go on like you never missed a beat.

Once you get everything backed up, download Everest and have a look under its Storage section. There's an icon there for SMART - it'll tell you exactly the drive says is failing.
