The article does a fair job of covering the relative details on both sides. If Gore had gotten the recount he petitioned for he probably would have lost, is what the consortium recount showed. This article doesn't mention, however, that if Bush had gotten the recount he counter-demanded Bush would have lost. There is also, of course, a certain convergence of law and bias is Harris' case. Both sides used or were plagued by the time limit. Gore chose a limited recount because of it, which was wrong, and Bush chose a full recount which was right, but which he knew he would loose but was conveniently impossible time wise to complete anyway . But regardless of motive and alibi, the full accurate statewide recount that should have been done then and was completed only many months later by a consortium of papers, showed Gore the plurality winner, and was then downplayed to make it look like Bush, in the midst of 9/11 actually won. The facts are that everything the Republicans and their supporters did was to make sure the votes were not counted while they shouted over and over about the fiction that they were counted again and again.
You don't ask five biased jokers to put you in office because you're in a hurry. The time limit should have been what was illegal. We elect people by what's in the ballot boxes, not how well you can tie up the recount with court actions till the buzzer rings. There was only one reason the Republicans didn't want those votes recounted. Governor Bush promised Florida to GW and the actual count didn't cooperate. Having to adjust an artificial time limit would have been much preferable over having the Supreme court flip flop on states rights and perform a coup. Day by day we see better and better what a huge catastrophe that was. We maybe need to add an IQ floor to the 35 and a born citizen restrictions for the office. The guy is an embarrassment to our people and in the eyes of the world.

Bush's final victory margin, which Harris certified, was 537 votes -- out of more than 6 million cast.
