This ASUS 6800XT doesn't look right...

Hi

I was just about to buy a new video card after the 9700pro died a few days ago, and i was looking at this one: Asus 6800xt - it's a store very near my home, which will spare me expensive international shipping.

However, the clocks seem a bit odd: 300mhz core and 700 mhz mem.
Isn't a 6800xt like 425 core/800 memory? Why is this asus so low?

Most importantly, how will it be performance wise, compared to a 9700pro?

The AGP version is going to be clocked lower than PCIe versions of the card, so 300/700 seems reasonable. Looking on Newegg.com, I see that most XTs have core clocks from 300 MHz to 350 MHz and RAM clocks from 600 MHz to 1000 MHz.

However, if you want to stick with AGP, I advise you to save some money and get a 6600GT instead if you are on a budget. In the US, a 6600GT costs a bit less than a 6800XT and can actually outperform it. The reason is that both cards have 8 pixel pipes, but the 6600GT is clocked higher both on the core and RAM. AGP versions of the 6600GT usually have core clocks around 500 MHz and memory clocks around 900-1000MHz. If you can find one where you live for a similar price to the 6800XT, I would take that to the XT.

It will be a lot faster than a 9700Pro :)

6800XT has a chance at unlocking, so that makes the 6600GT vs. 6800XT issue a little more complicated ;)

At least, IIRC. The 6800XT is just a crippled version of the 6800NU, which is just a very cripped version of the 6800GT, am I right?

6800xt is a renamed 6800le.

a 6800xt is crippled compared to a 6800
a 6800 is cruippled compared to a 6800gt
a 6800xt can technially unlock to 16pipes but ti is not likely and stock, it will not be faster than your 9700pro by much if at all. I'd go for a better card no sense sidegrading from a 9700pro to a 6800xt.

Hmmm, after looking on some sites I've read that some people have had success flashing their 6800XTs' BIOS with one from a 6800GS, thereby unlocking the card to 12 pixel pipelines. It's not guaranteed, but if it can be unlocked it would prove to be a decent upgrade.

Shouldn't riva tuner be enough to unlock the pipes, or would a full bios flash unlock more performance overall?

Anyway if its compared to a 9700pro it'll be enogh, since i play @ 1024x768 mostly - remember that it died - i'm not upgrading. I dont want to invest a lot of money in a dead technology (AGP). Also, I was planning on keeping this tower for about two more years, and if the games released then are playable @ even 800x600, then everything's fine.
