Sadly there are cases where irrational behaviour occurs, particular if there are mental health issues.

Whilst I'm not comparing animals to humans, there are certain species which will eat their own offspring if they are in danger of being found by a predator, so they can successfully escape and reproduce another day.

And animals kill their offspring sometimes, not even to try to protect them.
Problem is, we're the ones who have a choice, and know that we have a choice. It's stuff like this that makes me glad no one from another star system has stopped by to visit yet. It'd be worse than just embarrassing to try to explain this sort of behavior.
