I'm building new XP 1800 system. Is the stock cooler in the AMD retail box any good?

Yeah it is adequate. I currently have the retail hs on my XP1600+ overclocked to 1444mhz. It keeps my cpu at 51C under full load.

Like minendo posted, if you're not overclocking, the stock fan will do quite nicely, it's a bit loud, but it will keep your XP alive. I just put together my XP 1800+ yesterday and while it runs towards the hot side, it's stable. Hope this helps vck6v3
