This always annoys me

Many times, after downloading and installing Windows updates, I get the screen at the end saying updates have successfully been installed on the computer and the computer needs to be restarted in order for the updates to take effect. There is a restart button on this window and pressing it causes the computer to restart. The annoying part is this: The hard drive light is still blinking like mad! Obviously, the computer is still reading/writing data on the hard drive. If I press the restart button at this point the computer still immediately starts to shutdown/restart. I wonder what happens to that data that is being read/written when the computer reboots?

Um, it waits until it is done then reboots. I've seen things take over 5 minutes after the reboot button was pressed.
