This 9600 pro is outta here as soon as 5700 is available.

(slight rant) Having gone with an ati card for the first time in ages I am starting to get fed up with it. I am on cat 3.6's I think at the moment and I have had problems with 4 out of 5 games I have played. Quite frankly as soon as the 5700 is available this card is outta here.
I just cant understand these people who say their are no problems with the card and its drivers. All I ever hear is nvdia this nvidia that in respect to performance / optimizations and yet in the 5 or more years I have used them I have had problems with perhaps 10% of games I have tried.

Setup (in case anyone can help)

865pe 2 x 256mb pc3200
p4 2.4
ati 9600 pro
Win2k Pro
Cat 3.7
directx 9.0b

Problems with games;

Vice city (problems with textures)
Halo (tried 1.02 patch no textures)
Metal gear solid (see above)
and a couple more I have had to uninstall, impossible creatures, starship troopers etc

Maybe try the Cat 3.8's? Especially if you don't even know what you're on at the moment. Also, have you updated 2k to SP4?

u didn't clean out ur old nVIDIA drivers, did u now? classic problem, reformat ur hdd for best effects .... blame nVIDIA, not ATI 😛

Actually I had to format start again because of the ATI drivers when I first got the card despite using driver cleaner regcleaner. So the blame as far as I am concerned is at the door of ATI drivers, sorry if you dislike this but its true.

Well thanks, but that still doesnt help. I have now tried cat 3.8's and no luck, I am going to uninstall Halo and reinstall without patching and see if that helps. At least 3dmark2003 works :disgust:

What happens Halo? And what are the other three games you have problems with, out of the five you mianly play?

I don't have any problems whatsoever in Halo with my 9800np, cats 3.8. What kind of problems are you getting?

Halo looks liek cr@p not textures at all applied to the models. Hard to describe but imagine plain polygons with basic colour. Currently downloading SP4 lets see if that helps, I am going to try it on my other machine with a fx5200 and see if it plays, if it does I will swap out the 9600pro - which is a bit sad really.

You're using the retail Halo, not a beta right? That's very bizarre - missing textures! See if any other 9600 users are getting these results, because I've never heard of this before!

I have searched the google group and their is 3 other instances I can find of it happening. I have tried the ps2.0/1.4 switch and varied texture / detail level. This is the retail boxed version.

Try disabling fastwrites both in BIOS and ATi smartgart tab,I too went from Nvidia to ATi but never had any problems with my Sapphire 9700NP with any of my games.

I forgot to say have you played around in the ATi control panel with the quality slider settings for textures etc?

Make sure you uninstal the 3.7's first from add remove. do not reboot until you remove the control panel also, and use drive cleaner to clean out the remainder files before you reboot to install the 3.8's

Well smartgart wont work, if I set it to agp 4 x or to disable fast writes it reboots and does nothing I despair.

smartgart does that cause it doesn't find proper motherboard / agp drivers. get the newest chipset drivers.

Mingon, I had the same problem playing Halo on my friend's computer. It turns out that the problem is not with ATI but perhaps you messed with the settings. Go into Ati's control panel and under Direct3d, move the slider bar to quality for everything. That should solve your missing textures probelm.

ya if you have the texture detail on anything but quality halo will do that.

yes...also if you turn the texture detail in the control panel to performance mode

Is that just a 9600 thing? My D3D setting are default (balanced) and the game looks like it's supposed to with a 9700P and latest Omega drivers.

Well it seems to be working fine now(ish) after changing the ago settings to 4 x and the texture level to quality it all seemed to work....Except at 1024x768 it was too slow (25-30fps) for my liking. As I use this for my gaming box onto my 32"tv I wanted to reduce the res to 800x600. Everytime I tried to do this during the game it crashed, eventually corrupting the install. So I uninstalled - reinstalled, but still the same problems so I decided on the spur of the moment to change the direct3d settings back to optimal instead of quality and finally I can play the game :Q 🙂

I `ve a custom setting , my sliders are all the way to max(high quality setting) for D3D and OpenGL and using 16x AF perfomance,AA is "application preference".Vsync is on .

Seems to work great with all the games I`ve tried.
