Third party password protection

I've tried a bunch of protection software, as well as encryption, but I can't seem to find a basic program that will let me password protect my folders. Note: I do not want to use the built in windows xp function of compressing>password protect. From the ones I have tried they only protect the files inside the folders. I want to be able to password the folder itself, so I have to input a password to get into the folder. Are there any basic programs out there that will do this for free?
