Perhaps what we think is the sequel is actually the original movie, making the original movie ACTUALLY a prequel! The third movie in the chain is simply the sequel and the circle is complete!

Well, considering the pre in prequel means that it has to precede the others in the sequence, it would be difficult to say something comes before something that has yet to exist.
