"According to the latest Naval update, not only are there now two aircraft carriers situated at the Straits of Hormuz, but a third one, CVN 77 G.H.W. Bush, is under way on a deployment to the 5th and 6th fleet AORs."

"A week ago Die Welt reported that, in what may soon be a repeat of the Cuban missile crisis, US arch-enemy Iran, following a secret agreement signed on October 19, 2010 of strategic cooperation, Venezuela has allowed Iran to commence construction of a missile base on Venezuelan soil."

"Die Basis soll auf der Peninsula de Paraguaná, etwa 120 Kilometer entfernt von der kolumbianischen Grenze, entstehen."

Roughly ... they're building a missile base in Peninsula de Paraguaná.

Via Babelfish ... "The basis is on that Peninsula de Paraguaná, about 120 kilometers far away from the Colombian border, develop."

I want missile defense aimed at South America. End all 3 wars overseas, bring our military home to deploy on the border, use the saved money to rush laser defense systems to completion.

End the embargo against Cuba. We're far too late in countering Chavez's influence over them, but at least we can still try.

Order of Events:

1.) Iran builds missile base in Venezuela.

2.) US Military locates and destroys base.

3.) Iran retaliates by sending more suicide bombers into Iraq to target Iraqi civilians and coalition forces. Oh wait, they're already doing this.

The Enterprise should be nearing the end of its deployment and heading home.

The Bush is probably its replacement.

aka I wouldn't read too much into this.

Agreed. OTOH, ravers need some perceived faux outrage to rave about, and this is just another in a long string of them.

Iran is just protecting it's oil like the U.S. does, nothing new here.

Embargo against Cuba has to be one of the stupidest long standing policies of the United States.

Anyway, this isn't Missile Crises #2 because Iran is not a threat any more than a yapping 12 lb puppy behind an invisible fence is to me when I walk around my block. If it crosses the line and nips my heels I'll kick it back onto its property.

Missile Crisis sucked because Russia, even though weaker, could still more or less eradicate meaningful life for almost all of America.

If they tried to fire an Iranian missle from there, they would probably miss and blow up Panama

The assumption being that the USA itself is the target and not a means to intimidate a US Ally.

Iraq is on the other side of the planet and had a fairly large army, it took us what a week or two to take out the vast majority of their military? I am not talking about the bullshit of turning professional soldiers into a police force on foreign lands I am talking about the actual .mil versus .mil part. We could assrape Venezuela's military and infrastructure over the course of a long weekend if they were dumb enough to get froggy.

Sorry, I am just not that worried about this.

Like Venezuela has any interest in attacking the US.

They're not the ones who plotted in a coup that removed OUR elected President.

Outrageous. What is Iran's stated purpose for building a missile base halfway around the world?

Attempting to reinforce their position as head of the international league of dictatorial idiots? Like others have said, they couldn't really hurt the US even if they had 3 working ICBMs. They could cause serious damage, but at the cost of their existence. Even Iran isn't that stupid.

The U.S. should have at least one SSBN within striking distance of Venezuela and Iran.

Like we don't. There are 18 OHIOs out there somewhere silently just waiting for this eventuality. One can kill 3/4 of Iran.

What was our stated purpose for building a missile base halfway around the world in Turkey on the USSR border in the 1950's, providing the excuse for Cuban missiles?

We're a super power. We're charged with policing the entire world, and the world expects us to live up to that obligation.
